Saddleback Cellars

Saddleback Cellars Rustic and modest, Saddleback Cellars takes its name from Saddleback Mountain located in Orange County, California where Nils was born and raised. Established in 1976, the first vintage was released in 1982 and we became a bonded winery one year later. The winery is owned and operated by Nils Venge and his family. There are 17 acres of prime Oakville fruit on property. Saddleback Cellars is proud of its diminutive stature and being one of the “boutique” wineries in the Napa Valley.

  Saddleback Cabernet Sauvignon
Delightful!! This colorful and beautifully balanced wine is quite opulent and forward in approach. The mix of nicely integrated fruit components of bright cherries, red fruits like plum and blueberries are barked up elements of sandalwood and roasted almonds. These layers of flowers make for a full and pleasing mouthful. This Cabernet finishes long and smooth with good aging potential. Simply exquisite!
  Saddleback Cabernet Sauvignon
Aromas of blackberry, Japanese plums, cloves, violets, chocolate and toffee fill the nose while tasting flavors of dark, viscous fruits such as cassis, black currants and plums. Voluminous and satiny mouth feel, balanced yet powerful tannins with a long, velvety finish. This wine will certainly age for a dozen or more years.
  Saddleback Cellars, Chardonnay Napa Valley
Open this bottle and you catch the full nose of pineapple, tropical fruits and a subdued hint of oak. Pour this wine and you see the wonderful gold/straw in your glass, a clean and bright promise of what’s to come. Take your first sip, and note the clean crisp tones, the apple and bright acid, and enjoy! Mark liked the clean finish, noted the acids and found this a wine for picnic time! I enjoyed the fruity nose, the crispness on the palate and found it a grand wine for our pan scared scallops on corn stew.
  Saddleback Cellars, Old Vines Zinfandel
Rich, Succulent ripe fruit brings flavors of chocolate covered cherries, vanilla and coconut. The long, velvety mouth feel lingers well after the glass has emptied.
  Saddleback Cellars, Sauvignon Blanc
It’s all here: the citrus and hibiscus nose, the wonderful gold/green color, the grand flavors that show off this varietal? Hard to ask for more! Crisp, with a clean acid balance and light, sweet oak; youthful and a perfect food wine, this SB gives you the flavors of summer and the pleasures that come from a well crafted wine. Tropical fruits, a nice finish, a stand out in the world of wanna-be SB’s – turn to this wine when you wish to enjoy what a Sauvignon Blanc can be

  Saddleback Pinot Blanc
Catch the bright, summery, floral and apple aromas of this white wine. The creamy light tropical flavors brought about by the stirring of lees, shine right through with honey dew melon and just enough marmalade and spice to tantalize your senses.
  Saddleback Pinot Blanc
Notes of honeydew melon, white peach and honeysuckle in the nose with very crisp and bright acidity. The oak is very delicate, though it spent seven months in French barrels. Stirring the lees provided the gylcerol, full-bodied mouth feel to balance the intense citrus flavors with a creamy finish
  Saddleback Pinot Grigio
This wine displays honeydew, pear and sweet orange blossom aromas with rich hints of vanilla and meringue. A lush tropical finish.
  Saddleback Viognier
We bottled this wine with our grower, John Baranek and his family from Clarksburg on May 12, 2003. The sixteen rows of well cared for fruit yielded 441 cases of delicious wine. Floral notes accompany a perfectly balanced bouquet of honey and citrus aromas. On the palate, it displays a warm and silky mouth feel with subtle acidity.

  Venge Family Reserve Cabernet
Nils and his team are rightly proud of this effort, particularly given the fact that 1998 was such an uneven year, and Proud they should be! Mark and I agreed on this wine: chocolate, tar, plum, and rich fruit are all on the nose. A deep red to purple in the glass, this wine shows the extraction and color that promises to treat the palate...and it does! I liked the full body, tight tannins and nice vanilla finish. Mark, too, was caught by the bursting flavors that greet you upon tasting, he thought the Cab held a great potential to age well. I enjoyed this wine to the end, and found two hours after opening that we were catching nuances and flavors still blossoming in the glass... great indicator that you can lay this down for ten years.
  Venge, Sangiovese, Penny Lane Vineyard
This is not your Italian father’s Sangiovese! Rich and full of fruit flavors, mouth filling and ripe, this is a perfect example of the new world Sangiovese. Mark love the nose of dark cherry jam and earthy note, was wowed by the silky mouthfeel, and enamored of its finish. I thought: This Penny lane IS “…in my ears and in my eyes!” (apologies to Paul and John). I like the style, it offers much greater depth than most Italian Sangiovese, yet still has the acid and finish that tell of its heritage.
