Hess Collection Winery

Hess Collection Winery Donald Hess established his first Mount Veeder vineyard in 1978, from the beginning recognizing that on these ridges and benchlands, the potential for great winegrowing was clear. A deep, rocky mix of ancient seabed and volcanic soils provides a home for vineyard blocks producing small, concentrated fruit that reflects the challenges of growing grapes at higher altitudes in the coolest mountain growing region in Napa. The Hess Collection winery is part of a historic site where wine was first produced in the 1860’s, in a native stone building hewn by masons in 1903. The original stone structure is now joined by The Hess Art Collection, a world-class showcase of contemporary art that captures “two passions under one roof.” The first Hess Collection vintage was 1983. The Hess Collection uses sustainable, environmentally-sound practices with the axiom, “Nurture the land, and return what you take.” That philosophy brings with it a dedication to delivering wines that speak to their natural origins.

  Artezin
The carefully selected fruit for Artezin comes from some of California's best Zinfandel growing regions including Napa Valley, Amador County and Mendocino County. A deep garnet red in color, this Zinfandel elicits aromas of jammy raspberries interlaced with spicy nuances including black pepper, cassis, and cloves. Flavors follow through with black cherry and exotic spices while the mouth feel is full and rich with a hint of chocolate on the plush finish. Meant for immediate enjoyment this 2003 Artezin is a true representation of California Zinfandel.
  Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet expresses ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit with hints of cedar and mocha oak. The second layer brings complexity with earth, leather, and spice. The palate is broad and deep with black fruit flavor that is nicely framed by full, round tannin. This wine is typical of mountain Cabernet Sauvignon with a structure that will allow for up to fifteen years of cellar aging.
  Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2001 vintage is a year for collectors. The growing season was nearly perfect, starting out with warm spring conditions that allowed the vines to express themselves with good growth. The summer weather was also warm but rarely hot, allowing steady ripening as harvest approached. The fruit ripening did not stall as sometimes can happen with cooler weather and we finished our picking by October 30th- a full two weeks earlier than some years. The aroma is concentrated and starts out with ripe fruit expressions of cassis and black cherry. Classic varietal characters of earth, cedar, and spice bring complexity. The palate adds flavors of blackberry and dark chocolate richly framed with ripe mountain tannins. The structure of this wine suggests improvement over the next ten to fifteen years.
  Hess Collection Chardonnay
The 2003 Collection Chardonnay exhibits the Hess signature of proprietary flavors and crisp acidity. Aromas of orange zest, tropical fruit, and floral characters are followed by notes of honey suckle, pear, and caramel. The mid palate brings flavors of orange and apricot and is full bodied and concentrated. The finish of the wine contains oak toast, vanilla, and crème brûlée flavors with a crisp acidity that cleanses the palate through the lingering finish.
  Hess Collection Chardonnay
The 2004 Hess Collection Chardonnay exhibits its signature of proprietary flavors and crisp acidity that originate from the vineyard plantings of a unique blend of seven rootstocks and nine hand selected types of musque chardonnay. This spice rack of chardonnay shows in the aromas of guava, pineapple and orange blossom. Rich and lush, the palate of flavors of pear and vanilla are balanced with nice acidity and evolve through the finish.
  Hess Collection Late Harvest Viognier
Aromas of orange blossom, nectarine, and honey suckle are vibrant in this late harvest Viognier. A very small percentage of the fermented nectar was aged in new French oak to complement the inherent spiciness. The finish is ultra rich and layered with a multitude of flavors intermingled with crisp acidity.
  Hess Collection Lion
This wine is made in a style that expresses what fully ripe mountain Cabernet can offer. Deep, dark blackberry and cassis framed by toasty oak are followed with notes of sage, anise, earth, and cedar. Concentrated and full bodied, flavors of wild berry and spice meld with supple, mouth coating tannin to create a lingering impression that invites another sip. This wine drinks great right now but true to our Mount Veeder vineyards, it will continue to improve over the next decade.
  Hess Collection Malbec
In the 2001 growing season Mother Nature provided nearly perfect spring and summer weather, allowing even fruit set, balanced ripening, and extensive hang time. Our well-drained mountain soils, extremely low yields, and excellent sun exposure of these Malbec blocks concentrated the flavors and ripened the phenolics to their optimum heights. Aromas of boysenberry, white pepper, & exotic spice are followed by toasty oak reminiscent of vanilla and caramelized brown sugar. The flavors of fresh black berry jam and caramel coated blueberries integrate with fine grain French oak, spice, and sage. Supple and seamless fleshy tannins coat the mid pallet and finish. The fruit forward character makes this wine approachable in 2004 while cellaring insures enjoyment over the next decade.
  Hess Collection Meritage
Five varieties blended together create layers of aromas and complex flavors. Bright cherry, ripe plum, vanilla, white pepper, and exotic spice fill the aroma in the glass. The palate adds flavors of cherry, boysenberry, ripe figs, toasty oak and baker’s chocolate richly framed with ripe mountain tannins. The structure of this wine suggests improvement over the next ten to fifteen years.
  Hess Collection Mountain Cuvée
The 2002 Hess Collection Mountain Cuvée is the premiere release of our proprietary blend of estate grown Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. This wine reflects the many different terroirs of our steep Mount Veeder slopes. After over a quarter of a century farming Mount Veeder we have discovered which varietals excel in each unique vineyard block with their varying altitudes, exposures, soil, and micro-climatic conditions. We were thus led to the Mountain Cuvée by listening to the mountain. A Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend, the wine is both powerful, yet elegant. The lifted aroma profile of floral notes, red cherry, vanilla, spice and cedar is followed by a second layer of black licorice, wild berry, and pepper. These aromas follow through in the flavors of bright red fruit, spice and a fleshy round palate integrated with French oak and a satin finish. Enjoy this new release - a true expression of wine from mountain vineyards.
  Hess Collection Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
This 2000 Reserve Cabernet offers rich blackberry, vanilla, and cassis. The secondary aromas bring cedar, earth, and mocha. Chocolate, caramel, and blueberry are some of the flavors that linger.
  Hess Collection Reserve Chardonnay
The 2000 Reserve Chardonnay comes from specific hand selected blocks in our American Canyon vineyard, located near the San Pablo Bay. The grapes were selected for this blend by taste as the winemakers walked through the vineyard, choosing only the vines that displayed intense fruit and spice characteristics. From this base we enhanced the wine using age-old Burgundian techniques to create balance between the fruit, oak, and texture. The Hess Collection Reserve Chardonnay is a wine that with time evolves in your glass. The first impression is lemon zest and orange blossom, followed by cedar, spice, and caramel toasty oak. The palate begins with clean, lemony citrus flavors that build in concentration. Toasted almond and crème brulee lead you to a significant finish.
  Hess Collection Sauvignon Blanc
The Hess Collection Small Block Series wines come from vineyards of true distinction. This Sauvignon Blanc originates from a steep hillside vineyard in Lake County and is a blend of two different Sauvignon Blanc clones. The Musqué Sauvignon Blanc clone makes up 35% of the blend while the Clone 1 Sauvignon Blanc makes up the other 65%. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel (15%) and neutral French oak barrels (85%). The Musqué clone brings tropical aromas of pineapple, ruby grapefruit, and melon. The Clone 1 adds grassy aromas typical of this variety, along with white pepper and ginger. The two clones combined add to the complexity of this Sauvignon Blanc. This is a great summer wine with ample acidity and will pair nicely with a wide variety of food including shellfish, creamy pasta dishes, teriyaki chicken, and spicy fruit salsas. Serve chilled. Total production: 540 cases all handcrafted.
  Hess Collection Syrah
The wine is bursting with wild berry and mountain blackberry, followed by allspice and white pepper. Berry flavors are persistent throughout the palate leading to ripe but evident tannin that lingers. This syrah will age easily through 2010.
  Hess Collection Zinfandel
The Zinfandel in this blend comes from an old clone grown in Dry Creek Valley. We chose this clone because of its small berries that deliver great color and intense fruit character. Zinfandel can come in many different styles. The Hess Collection style is big, based on ripe fruit and full extraction. The aroma has raspberry, ripe plum and cedar. White pepper follows with vanilla and a touch of well-integrated oak. The mid-palate offers a wonderful sweetness that leads into round, chewy tannins which linger into the finish. The beauty of Zinfandel is the fruit, so enjoy this wine young, within the next five years.
  Hess Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 vintage started with a very warm March giving the vines a boost at the start of their growing season. This proved invaluable as the summer’s weather pattern was cooler than normal. By the end of summer, concern increased again because the grapes were behind in maturity. However, September brought back the beautiful, warm weather that made California famous. The vines responded and by the beginning of October we were harvesting grapes with exceptional flavors. Bing cherry, allspice, and nutmeg start the aroma presenting a classic Napa style Cabernet Sauvignon. The second layer brings loganberry, red licorice, fennel and toasty oak. The full texture and concentrated flavors of the wine coats your mouth. The finish reminds you of its heritage - Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - where supple yet present tannins will allow this wine to age well over the next five years. Some of the foods that pair well with this wine are: caramelized shallots and onions, wild mushrooms, braised root vegetables, rich moist fish and grilled meats.
  Hess Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine has all the classic Cabernet Sauvignon flavors of cherries and cassis but is further enhanced by other aspects of the blend. Syrah brings white pepper and spice, Petite Sirah adds plum, earth, and weight on the mid palate. The hint of French oak helps balance the fruit and provides focus on the aroma. The palate reveals red cherry, plum, and vanilla and the Petit Verdot and Merlot help integrate the tannins in the finish.
  Hess Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
We blended this year's Estate Cabernet with some Petit Verdot to add anise and floral aromas, Syrah to enhance the mid palate, and Merlot to soften the finish. The resulting wine offers a ripe mixed wild berry aroma with cedar, vanilla, and plum. Coffee and mocha intertwine with black licorice and black cherry. The palate reinforces the aroma with cherry and plum flavors followed by sage and floral notes. The texture is round with nice chewy tannins that will make this wine excellent for tonight’s meal. For optimum enjoyment, drink this wine between 2004 and 2009.
  Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2002 Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon brings up-front ripe raspberry, black cherry, and currant to the nose with toffee, brown sugar, cedar, and toast added from oak aging. In the mouth, the fruit continues showing ripe pear, peach, and pineapple with a great texture on the mid-palate leading into a crisp, bright finish. Given the fresh fruity style, this wine is best consumed in the next two years.

  Small Block Series Viognier
This wine offers aromatically classic Viognier scents of honeysuckle and nectarine with a Muscat-like quality on the palate. Aged in 5 year old French oak barrels for 8 months, the absence of new oak allows the complex, fully textured mouthfeel of this wine to shine through. Only 94 cases made.
  Small Block Series Zinfandel
The aroma has raspberry, ripe plum and cedar followed by white pepper with vanilla and caramel. The mid palate offers jammy raspberry fruit that leads into round, chewy tannins which linger through the finish.
