Hatcher Winery

Hatcher Winery Welcome to Hatcher Winery... A Bonded California Winery established in 2002. Matthew Hatcher is owner and winemaker. His success as an amateur winemaker motivated him to risk all and begin this venture. He's assisted by his brother, Sewell and assistant winemaker Scotty Hancock. We're located in the Sierra Foothills with the winery and tasting room in Murphys, and estate vineyard in Angels Camp. We're currently producing less than 3000 cases per year. Matt makes many different small lots of wine, often these small lots produce less than 200 cases. The mission of Hatcher is best effort at all we do, compromise just isn't in our vocabulary. Matt’s commitment as an owner/winemaker is to work with the vineyard managers in growing premium fruit complimented by the best oak barrels to suit the wines. He manages the vineyard with the same level of integrity, producing the Estate Zinfandel that has been so well received. The first vintage (2002), was critically acclaimed and is entirely sold out. Our wines cover a wide spectrum of tastes and are reasonably priced. Current production is from fruit grown in the Sierra Foothill region. Our commitment is to this region, but we will seek the best fruit from other areas as well. This is demonstrated by the 2003 and 2004 Hatcher Sonoma County Viognier. Matt’s winemaking style is still evolving as he learns new and innovative viticultural and winemaking practices to yield powerful, yet balanced, red wines, and white wines with classic aromas, rich textures and lingering flavors of French oak. We invite you to visit Matt and Sewell, and enjoy our wines in the historic cellar tasting room. We're open from 11:00am-5:00pm, Friday thru Sunday and also by appointment. Located on Main Street in downtown Murphys, Ca (across from Grounds restaurant).

  Cabernet Franc
The 2003 Cabernet Franc is dark red in color with purple hues. This wine is loaded with fruit on the front. The back palate assisted by 22 months in french oak. It's Matt's favorite Bourdeaux varietal to enjoy with elegant food. A promising wine for years to come!
  Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 18 months in French Oak, and an additional 12 months in the bottle prior to release. This wine features medium tannins, aroma of dried cranberry and tea leaves. Flavors of ripe cherry and plum with a finish of cigar box cedar and clove. Sophisticated and satisfying. Pairs perfectly with Lamb Shanks, or Hot Tuna, and Leftover Salmon… (Two of our favorite bands).
  Cinsault
(Sin-so) What a cool color! This dry rose is light in style and opens with hints of raspberry. Tangerines and melon in the mid palate. Is there a hint of strawberry in the finish? Pairs well with prosciutto and mellon or brie. No residual sugar, DRY!
  Estate Zin
Big and soft...We love this wine...Better than the 2002? You tell us.
  Sauvignon Blanc
This is the First Sauvignon Blanc Matt has made from the vineyards of Lori Kautz. This wine boasts bright acidity. A light floral aroma with hints of vanilla and graprfruit lead to a clean finish with enough body to enjoy with a picnic or summer dinner.
  Syrah
Awesome...Kevin Locke comes through again! Kevin grows the fruit for this Syrah in Murphys. Black in color, HUGE, with ripe fruit...Sewell's favorite
  Tempranillo
(temp-ra-neo) This sexy seductive Spanish varietal will haunt your periphery. Full bodied satin, leather and lace will whip your senses with medium tannins that caress your toungue with its seamless Mediterranean beauty. Blended with Cabernet to create this complex red wine. WOW, if Spain made a sexy sports car, it would be called EL Tempranillo.
  Viognier
(v-on-yeah) Gardenias with a hint of smoke on the nose. Apricots, all-spice and almond finish a very full bodied white. This Viognier is the only wine that we produce from outside Calaveras County. The grower is Russian Hill Vineyard in Sonoma County (We don't drink Chardonnay any more). Pairs well with Sunday night H.B.O.
