Mitchell Katz Winery
|
|
For Mitch, winemaking is his passion - handed down to him by his grandfather, a home winemaker for over a half a century. With help from his wife, Alicia, production has grown to 3000 cases a year since starting their business in 1998. The Livermore Valley, one of California's oldest wine regions, has provided fertile ground for Mitch to harvest his dream of handmaking affordable quality wines. The Tasting Room and Winery facility is located at 1188 Vineyard Ave. in Pleasanton. There is no charge for tasting. The tasting room is open Saturdays and Sundays 12pm - 5pm.

Livermore Valley Chardonnay
At first approach the wine asserts green apple characteristics accented with butterscotch and subtle wisps of smoky toast. The flavors build from a crisp bright citrus interlude to a full symphony of pears, apples and honey
|
Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The small berries of this vineyard produce tight concentrated flavors of berries, casis. Aged in oak for 24 months gives it great balance between fruit and oaky tanning.
|
Livermore Valley Merlot
A red wine superhero in all aspects. High extraction from the fruit has concentrated all aspects of this wine; from the dark hues of the color to the intense black cherry and plum character. Generous new oak gives substantial texture with layers of complexity, the flavors are zesty with a focused core.
|
Livermore Valley Petite Sirah
This offering shows incredible concentration of fruit, with loads of blackberry and cranberry flavors; balancing with a spicy nose. Full-bodied on the palate with soft and silky tannins and a smoky almost nutty finish.
|
Livermore Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Planted nearly 30 years ago – long before growing grapes was a sign of social status – Bud Griest – gentleman, physician, grower - made another commitment to enhancing the quality of our valley and Shadow Hills Vineyard was born.
This offering truly captures the sensuous side of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. We gently nurtured the creamy buttery characteristics to the forefront. Flavors reminiscent of butterscotch and peaches fill your palate against a backdrop of clove and nutmeg spiciness. Accents of vanilla from new oak barrels bring the flavors to a pleasing crescendo in your mouth.
|
Livermore Valley Zinfandel
Dark, deep, and rich on all counts. From the intensely textured deep red purple hues everything about this offering is BIG, HUGE, INTENSE and more; a richness reminiscent of dark chocolate raspberry ganache with a long lingering finish.
|
Napa Valley Rhapsody
This wonderful blend of Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon and Livermore Valley Merlot compliment each other with a ripe, plush, opulent style. Layers of seductive black cherry, blackberry, and plum with a smooth texture and ripe mouth-coating tannins are accented by a hint of melted chocolate.

Reserve Sangiovese
The 2002 proved an elusive vintage to interpret. Very shy and timid from the onset this wine developed at its own pace. Your introduction is soft and delicate cherry fruit-like aromas against a velvety backdrop of minty spice. Then slowly, in your glass, as it did in the barrel, this wine gradually unfurls layer upon layer of complexity and character.
If you’re as patient as we are, this release is a treasure to be discovered. The subtle vanilla-cherry aromas and flavors give way to a bold and robust release. Garnet in color with a glint of purple, balanced with just the right amount of bright acidity, making this wine the perfect match for almost any food.

Sangiovese Crackerbox Vineyard
For six years I have been making Sangiovese in the same style, very light oak, big fruit, dark rich color and it has been our most popular wine. Like the grower from Crackerbox Vineyard, John & Courtney, I am always looking to make it better. So I did an experiment. We did two barrels of Sangiovese I new French Oak. In the past we have done it in neutral French Oak, meaning not much wood flavor because Sangiovese grapes tend to be a little transparent and can be easily over powered. So I thought maybe a light, smooth French Oak for only one year would not hurt. Well I was right this wine is fantastic, all the wonderful flavors our Sangiovese has had in the past and now we have added notes of vanilla, Cherry and hints of smoky tobacco. Unfortuanely we only made two barrels, so it is not available to anyone but Club Members! Enjoy.

Shenendoah Valley Zinfandel
Delicate and elegantly styled with a tender middle palate. Young and very fruity raspberry introduction at first taste the flavors tend towards a crisp and bright offering. Very dry and balanced with a soft balanced tannin finish. A classic California styled table wine.
