Black Prince Winery

Black Prince Winery Black Prince Winery was conceived by John Sambrook (General Manager of the Opimian Society) in 2000, who wanted to establish a winery in this lovely, picturesque area of Prince Edward County. This region has the viticultural landscape to produce first-rate wines. The Black Prince was an Edward (Edward County), eldest son of Edward III.

  Bella Vigne Geisenheim
This Germanic variety, developed at Geisenheim, shows beautifully aromatic spicy perfume and luscious rounded grapefruit flavours. Floral character is somewhere between Muscat and Gewurtztraminer.
  Bella Vigne Leon/Zweigelt
  Black Prince Auxerois
Made from fruit exclusive to Black Prince, this wine is floral yet dry. Very Cold fermentation (48 F) using a champagne yeast strain promotes this “bread and apple” florality. A smooth fresh pear mouth-feel with a slightly tart (lime?) finish is a trade-mark of this grape variety. This is truly an easy drinking wine.
  Black Prince Baco Noir
A small percentage of Cabernet Franc from the Black Prince Vineyard has been added to the blend raising the fruit awareness and softening the finish. This is an unpretentious easy to drink red.
Black Prince Black Series Chardonnay Reserve
Mature, long lasting, buttery and dense. This wine aged for six months in oak barrel. Well-balanced acidity, yields a velvety smooth finish. Pleasing to the palate, this wine can stand-alone but makes an excellent addition to soft cheeses, cream-based pastas, pheasant and light meats.
  Black Prince Castell
This wine is chock full of holiday spirit, the nose is reminiscent of cloves and a warm winter stew. Medium bodied, it tingles pleasantly on the palate with cooked cranberries and baked apple tart. Good length.
  Black Prince Chambourcin 2003
This light red wine, much like gamay, shows well in its youth. Slightly stronger tannins provide a nice mouth feel with a longer than expected finish. This early drinking wine is best served slightly chilled.
  Black Prince Chardonnay VQA
Made from 90% Prince Edward County fruit this is a pristine, light to mid-weight Chablis style, unoaked Chardonnay. It has fresh Macintosh apple, lemon and mineral flavours. Crisp with a hint of rounding sweetness on the finish. Good length, even-handed and a joy to sip. (David Lawrason gave this wine 87 points)
Black Prince First Crush Baco Noir
Here is an early-drinking red, unpretentious and quaffable. Both local grown Baco Noir and Cabernet Franc have tannin components inhibiting short term consumption. However, the balance of the red grapes from the Black Prince Vineyard have also been added to the blend raising the fruit awareness and softening the finish. This is a barbecue wine to get your hands on.
  Black Prince First Crush Chardonnay
This finely textured Chardonnay, more in the style of an un-oaked Chablis than in the heavier styles of southern hemisphere New World productions. The grapes were souced from the same lots that produced the Medal winning wine of the previous vintage, but picked with a slightly lower suger level. The essential tropicality of the fruit is already beginning to show its potentional for melon and pineapple flavours. Nicely stated acidity gives length and definition to the fruit.
  Black Prince First Crush Vidal
Light golden colour is fresh and fragrant on the nose with floral tones and a modest tropical fruit that suggest the opulence of ripe Muscat grapes. The flavours are lined up and enhanced by vigorous lime-fresh acidity. The fruit leads into a long clean acidic finish. Will show at its best during the next year.
  Black Prince Non-Vintage Baco Noir
The 2004 and 2005 vintages have been blended together to give you this pleasant red, with loads of spice, slender feel and soft tannins. Flavours mindful of old world Rhone or Portuguese blend. Plumy and peppery notes. Mid-weight, taut and sourish acidity but not aggressive. Very good length. Now to 2008.
  Black Prince Nouveau Crush
Nouveau Crush 2004 is so named because it was the first wine made from our second harvest. Nouveau Crush will be released every December in the style of Beaujolais Nouveau. Following on the success of last year’s effort, vinifi cation for this wine was confi ned to first run juice. The result is a lighter-colored, more fruity, less tannic wine, ideal for casual sipping or light meals. Fruit flavors of cotton candy and raspberry are evident and each glass consumed invites another. Best served chilled.
  Black Prince Vidal Icewine
Sourced from the Lake Erie North Shore, this wine has been kept in bulk in a large temperature controlled vat. It has wonderful, luscious orange, caramel flavours, mouthfilling richness and a long finish. A perfect dessert in its own right or great with a range of desserts or even foie gras.
