Outpost Wines

Outpost Wines Standing high atop Howell Mountain, perched 2,100 feet above the floor of the Napa Valley, it's easy to see the inspiration, and adventurous spirit that is the essence of Outpost Wines. Outpost was established in 1998 with the vision of producing vintages that are a living, breathing embodiment of this magical place. Truly one of the world's great Zinfandel growing regions, the unique terror of the Outpost vineyards - the hard, rocky red soil, high altitude, gentle cooling breezes and sunny western exposure - produces fruit of incredible intensity and richness, with a distinctive spice you simply can't find anywhere else. Capturing the essence of the land's rugged terrain, Outpost creates world-class 100 percent varietal Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Grenache from our own hand-cultivated, organically farmed 42 acre estate vineyards. The guiding principle of our wine-making program is to realize the full potential of this piece of ground, to create a living history of vintages with immense character and a true sense of place. Sharing this philosophy and intrigued by the potential of the estate's magnificent vineyards, winemaker Thomas Brown has crafted wines from the beginning. Under Thomas's expert guidance, Outpost grapes are harvested very late in the season - by hand, at dawn - to preserve the full intensity and distinctive spicy character of the mountain fruit. The grapes are processed with as little manipulation as possible. Grapes from each block within the vineyard are fermented separately so that our winemaking team can be very selective about the lots that comprise the final blend. Wines are neither fined nor filtered allowing for the full expression of the vintages' potential. At Outpost, we take our role as stewards of the land very seriously, employing sustainable farming practices at every stage of cultivation. The result is a higher quality fruit with expressive consistency over each vintage year. Remarkable wines with a sense of place, creating a growing legacy year after year, vintage after vintage. That's what we're working towards at Outpost. We invite you to discover our wines and share the adventure.

  Outpost Petite Sirah
This wine has always been about potential. It has opened and closed twenty times since it finished fermenting. We've yet to have two identical tastes of this wine. The nose has the usual complement of Howell Mountain spice, intense wet stones/slate, anise and blackberries. Tannins take center stage on the palate with some bright cherry, raspberry and coffee notes. The wine has not finished filling out but with time in bottle, it has been slowly adding nuance. The end is huge, framed by hillside tannin and some nice acidity. Patience will be rewarded. The 2001 Petite Sirah will drink best in 3-5 years, maturing much more slowly than the 2002's.
  Outpost Zinfandel Howell Mountain
No vintage to date has come close to the size of the 2001. Possessing a massive, impenetrable purple/black color, the wine resembles Petite Sirah more than Zinfandel. The nose is unmistakably Howell Mountain: white and black pepper, crushed blackberries, bing cherries and grilled meats. The palate is glycerin sweet and chewy with a slightly more refined texture than the 2000. Tannins are abundant but sweet and ripe. The finish is long with black and red fruits, Provencal notes of lavender and sage, bittersweet chocolate and kirsch.
