I come from a family of 13: two parents, two girls and nine boys. I'm telling you in case you wonder why I put my first as well as my last name on my labels. The drive towards individual expression, which I was forced to develop at an early age, also shows up elsewhere on my labels. Reading down, we come to the varietal, and then something much rarer: the vineyard designation. I'm one of the few winemakers making single-vineyard wines. It's a challenge. In my case, obviously, an irresistible challenge. It exemplifies everything that attracted me to winemaking in the first place. I love to take the grapes from a particular site and let them show me different possibilities in the varietal, to make a wine in which the subtleties of the individual vineyard come through - a wine, you might say, with both a first and last name. I not only do not add other wines, I don't add yeast. Each wine is fermented with the natural range of native yeasts found in the vineyard. Since I can't fall back on blending different wines, it puts the onus squarely on myself to make each vineyard sing year after year. It's a solo performance - no hiding the baritones in the choir. I don't pile on the oak and malolactic fermentation. I don't make huge butterbombs. Instead, it's a careful balance - in which high notes sparkle but nothing is overdone and nothing is lost - that gives my wines a definite family resemblance. It's not so different from when I was growing up. Eager as I was to make my own mark, I was secretly pleased that everyone in town would take one look at me and say, "Yep, that's a Hobbs, all right."

2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, Oakville, Napa Valley
This wine is made from a vineyard with one of the richest heritages in all of Napa Valley, and the 2002 vintage provided a rare combination of fruit purity, uncommonly opulent tannins and balance. Located on the western side of the valley, the historic To Kalon vineyard receives the full benefit of morning and afternoon sun, as well as the cooling marine influences in the evening. Its gravelly soils are minerally and low in organic content. Aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months. 611 cases. Robert Parker commented that our 2002 vintage “is one of the greatest young cabernets I have tasted from California. Believe it or not, it reminds me of the way the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild tasted at age two or three.”

2003 Chardonnay, Richard Dinner Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
Since our first vintage in 1991, the wine we produce from this vineyard has developed a loyal following, becoming one of our most sought-after wines. As this vineyard ages, the quality remains superior but yields are more limited with each vintage. The 2003 is expressive and open with a nose of pineapple and apple butter, leading to flavors of red apple, dulce de leche and orange peel, and a racy finish. Aged 11 months in 74% new French oak.

2003 Chardonnay, Walker Station Vineyard, Russian River Valley
Walker Station Vineyard produces our most limited chardonnay, available exclusively to the mailing list and a few hand-picked restaurants around the country. Tropical floral notes and lemon zest on the nose lead to yellow and green apple on the elegant, layered palate, with hints of almond, mandarin orange and yeasty bread. The finish is soft with a touch of white pepper. Aged 15 months in 75% new French oak.

2003 Cuvee Agustina Chardonnay, Richard Dinner Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
This barrel selection is named after Paul’s daughter and is produced only in the very best vintages. 2003 began as a difficult one with hot and cold spikes, but has resulted in what we feel is one of the best Cuvee Agustina Chardonnays we have produced. Brilliant gold in color with a nose of honeysuckle and spice, this wine is unctuous and mouth-filling, with flavors of pear, spiced apple and lemon custard, and an enduring, velvety finish. Aged 16 months in 89% new French oak.

2003 Pinot Noir, Hyde Vineyard, Carneros, Napa Valley
Varying temperatures in Carneros throughout the spring and early summer resulted in smaller yields and therefore slightly more concentrated pinot noir. Saturated with deep maroon color, this wine opens with aromas of boysenberry and currant and shows focused, forward flavors of cherry, ripe plum and tea rose with a hint of vanilla. Brambly notes lead to firm tannins marking a lively finish. Aged 11 months in 69% new French oak.

Chardonnay, Richard Dinner Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain
We have been crafting chardonnay from this distinctive vineyard on Sonoma Mountain since 1991. This wine helped put us "on the map" and the 2004 vintage certainly lives up to the reputation it has garnered over the years.
Its yellow-gold color is accented by a pale straw rim. Scents of orange marmalade and gardenia are punctuated by a hint of caramel. A creamy texture and rich flavors of yellow apple, kumquat, harvest spices and toasted brioche meld to deliver a luxuriant mouth feel. A seemingly unstoppable finish is further enhanced by this wine’s hallmark mineral characteristics of volcanic tuft and crushed granite. Aged 11 months in French oak, 68% new.

Chardonnay, Russian River Valley
Pale yellow with a slight opalescence in appearance, the aromatics of this wine reveal citrus and crème brûlée with a hint of roasted coffee. The palate displays rich aromas of sautéed fig, apple, and nectarine with just a touch of spearmint. An underlying and intriguing minerality component adds beauty and complexity. This wine is well balanced and focused, and complemented by a lengthy finish. Aged 11 months in French oak, 58% new.
