Layton's Chance Vineyard and Winery

Layton's Chance Vineyard and Winery The Layton family has been farming in the Salem area of Dorchester County for several generations, on what is now 1800 acres known affectionately as Lazy Day Farms. Joseph H. Layton, Sr. bought the original farm in 1948, and farmed until 1981. In the mid-70s, Joseph H. Layton, Jr. and Laura Layton purchased Lazy Day Farms, which they still farm today with their son William. Over the years they have raised cattle and tomatoes; today they grow corn, soybeans, wheat and grapes. William and his wife Jennifer Layton, and their children Stephen and Alison, live on the Home Farm which is also the location of the new winery. In an effort to diversify their farming operation the family reevaluated their business, and a few years ago joined Maryland’s growing wine trade. They planted their first grapes in 2007, choosing to grow grapes hardy and well-suited to the Eastern Shore. The name Layton’s Chance comes from a family property nearby, an indication of the strong family history in the area. While the vines were climbing trellises, the Laytons took on different aspects of the project. Joe, Laura, William and Jennifer each own a quarter of the winery and make decisions by consensus, however each family member plays a distinct role. In the fall of 2009, the Laytons hired a few employees for vineyard and winery operations, and to help on the farm.

  Alison's Wonderful Watermelon Wine
Enjoy a taste of summer in a bottle! Made from 100% watermelons, this wine is a true local. Scooped by volunteers in the heat of summer, then produced in Dorchester County's first winery, the watermelon wine has been an adventure from the beginning. We're happy to present it this winter, a taste of sweet summer days and melony fruitiness.
  Chambourcin
Our very first dry red wine, the Chambourcin presents itself nicely as a versatile table wine. The distinct structure of balanced acidity and firm tannins pairs nicely with steak or red sauce based pasta. Tastings suggest dark fruit flavors such as currants and blackberries.
  Joe’s Cool Red
An all around easy drinking wine, Joe’s Cool Red is named in honor of Joseph Layton, Jr., one of the four founders and owners of Layton’s Chance. The irresistible sweet fruit flavor makes this blend a nice introduction for new wine drinkers. Experienced wine drinkers and novices will all enjoy sipping Joe’s Cool Red while having a Lazy Day at Layton’s Chance.
  Lazy Day Rosé
Our Rosé is an estate wine, produced from the first grapes planted and harvested here in our own vineyard. Made from Chambourcin grapes, the juice is separated from the skins and stems at the beginning, which minimizes tannins and enhances the fruity, melon flavors. It’s a house favorite!
  Lazy Day White
A fresh and delicious summer wine, Lazy Day White is made from Traminette grapes, a hybrid offspring of Gewürztraminer. Subtle sweetness adds to its excellent drinkability, and it closely resembles a Riesling. Â Zesty citrus flavors will bring a smile to your lips as you sit and watch the grapes grow.
  Norton
  Traminette
A dry white wine expressing a bright aroma with sharp citrus & green apple flavors. Comparable to Sauvignon Blanc.
  Vidal Blanc
A dry white wine, our Vidal Blanc offers light floral flavors reminiscent of early spring. Light on the nose but full in the mouth, our Vidal has hints of peaches and apricots. Even a typical red wine drinker will enjoy a glass of Vidal on a summer afternoon or with a light supper.
