Fortino Winery

Fortino Winery Established in 1970 by Ernest Fortino and his family with the idea that quality and customer service comes first, Fortino Winery offers you the wine-tasting experience of your lifetime as you relax and sample some of California's finest wines. Enjoy our site, as it represents the same painstaking craftsmanship that is within every bottle we offer. Salute! Fortino Winery is nestled in a mustard filled valley laden with ancient oaks and redwoods. Lining the winery are seventy-year-old grapevines nurtured by hot sunshine and a cool Mediterranean climate. Reminiscent of his native Cosenza, Italy, fourth-generation Winemaster Ernest Fortino fell in love with the Hecker Pass region and along with his family established Fortino Winery in 1970 and followed the American dream. Paying meticulous attention to quality and with countless hours of hard work, the Fortinos garnered over two hundred awards for such varietals as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petit Syrah, Merlot and Charbono, which are mainly sold retail and produced in small quantities. Today, as the fifth generation unfolds, Winemaster Gino and his sister Teresa are carrying on the family tradition of producing premium quality boutique wines at affordable prices. An exceptional wine is what you can expect from Fortino winery. Best known for the fine red wines, their compliment of premium white wines is superb. In addition to enjoying a picnic area and an expanded tasting room, visitors to the winery are invited to browse through the collection of gourmet products, crystal, wine-oriented specialty items and much more. For real wine lovers, Fortino Winery has a Fortino Tasting Panel (FTP), a unique wine club that affords an opportunity to sample and evaluate pre-releases, special bottlings and library selections. The winery ships two bottles of wine to you every other month for your evaluation and you receive discounts on all wine purchases as well as invitations to bi-annual FTP dinners and special events throughout the year. Best of all, there is no membership fee.

Products

  Burgundy Reserve
A medium-bodied red wine with a berry flavor with a slight hint of wood. Great with pasta or lamb. Intense fruit, soft finish, a special blend handed down through the generations. Blend of Zinfandel, Carignan and Grenache. Always a favorite! With each new release, Gino follows the family's special blend of Zinfandel, Carignan and Greenache to create a delicious wine every time. Mouth-watering fruit and a soft, dry finish will keep you want for more.
  Carignan
100% Carignan grapes with flavors of plum, raspberry fruits that linger on the palate. Deep plum color, hints of smoke and oak. Fruity with a spicy finish. Medium bodied. Carignan is a late budding grape that needs a warm climate to ripen, such as we have here in Gilroy. Most vines in California are old and ours are over 70 years old. In Italy it is called Carignano and can be found on the island of Sardinia and in the region of Lazio on the west coast of the boot.
  Charbono
An extremely limited varietal, it's a Fortino Family favorite. Inky, deep purple in color. Full bodied, hints of mint, black cherry and smokey cedar. It can be enjoyed while young, but if you can cellar it for 10 to 20 years you will be rewarded with some elegant flavors.
  Chardonnay
Chardonnay is probably the most widely recognized name of white wines. The Chardonnay grape is very adaptable to a wide range of climates. Cool to hot, it takes on different characteristics depending on the temperature of the area. Flavors range from apple in cooler area to tropical fruits in warmer climates.
  Merlot
Another fabulous creation from our winemaker, Gino Fortino. Notice the rich deep purple color. Taste the mouthwatering flavors of dark cherries, plums and raisins. Finish with notes of pepper and spice. A definite must try!
  Riesling
An off dry, distinctively floral wine, with apple like notes. This wine pairs well with a ripe Brie or a soft, creamy blue cheese, roast pork or crab!
  Santa Clara Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Estate Santa Clara Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Dry, full-bodied wine, excellent for aging. You will love this one! Cabernet Sauvignon makes the most dependable candidate for aging, more often improving into a truly great wine than any other single varietal. With age, its distinctive black currant aroma can develop bouquet nuances of cedar, violets or leather and its typically tannic edge may soften and smooth considerably.
  Sauvignon Blanc
Luscious flavors of melon, tart green applies and pear. Distinctive of aromas of soft green grass and smokey wood. Tart and tangy with a dry finish.
  White Zinfandel
Semi-sweet with hints of luscious fresh strawberry and kiwi flavors. Great for a hot summer day. Excellent paid with frui and cheese. Refreshing on a warm spring day.
  Zinfandel
Another fabulous creation from our winemaker, Gino Fortino. Notice the rich deep purple color. Taste the mouthwatering flavors of dark cherries, plums and raisins. Finish with notes of pepper and spice. A definite must try!
