Joseph Phelps Vineyards

Joseph Phelps Vineyards Founded in 1972, the winery and home vineyards of Joseph Phelps are located in Spring Valley near St. Helena, on a 600-acre ranch that is characterized by rolling hills, California native oaks, and 120 acres of meticulously tended vines. In addition to the home ranch, Phelps owns 300 acres of Napa Valley vineyards in the premiere growing regions of Stag's Leap, Rutherford, Oakville, Oak Knoll and the eastern foothills of Napa. In Sonoma County, an ambitious project was undertaken in 1999 to purchase land and develop vineyards along the western frontier of the Sonoma Coast, and today Phelps has 80 acres of Pinot Noir and 20 acres of Chardonnay planted in Freestone. Construction of a small winery in the midst of the Freestone vineyards is currently in the design phase. Varietals produced annually at Phelps include Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Insignia (one of California's most successful first growth luxury blends), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, several Rhône-style wines, and a luscious dessert wine made from Scheurebe.

  Backus Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 Backus Cabernet is saturated in color with a dark purple, ruby red hue. The aromas of mocha, minerality, black fruits and graphite are characteristic of this unique, grand cru vineyard in the Oakville appellation. The incredible nose is framed by robust tannins, bright fruit flavors and subtle French oak notes, with a depth and concentration that follows through on the palate.
  Eisrébe
Because of the late vintage, and rain at various stages during ripening and cluster formation, botrytis cinerea formed in several sections of our Scheurebe vineyard. The honeyed component contributed by the botrytis nicely enhances the aromatic complexity of the wine, and aromas of honeyed, syrupy stone fruit and pear linger as the wine finishes with bright acidity.
  Fogdog Chardonnay
The 2005 Fogdog Chardonnay offers a rich mix of flavors including lemon zest, fig, and spices characteristic of the region. The mineral notes provide a nice, rounded structure and an intensity that persists on the palate. We suggest decanting the wine prior to serving.
  Fogdog Pinot Noir
The 2005 Fogdog Pinot Noir from the Freestone Vineyards is a fresh, vibrant Pinot Noir with lively spices and wild strawberry flavors that linger on the palate. The tannin and acidity are well balanced and provide a structure that will help this wine to age nicely in the bottle.
  Innisfree Cabernet Sauvignon
Selective blending creates Innisfree Cabernet Sauvignon, and in 2004 we assembled wine from young or newly developed vineyard blocks for this label. The wine contains bright, cherry-like flavors and is constructed to be enjoyed over the near term.
  Joseph Phelps Eisrebe 375ml
This wine contains good texture, acidity and richness which perfectly complement the seductive, honeyed aromas and flavors of ripe apricots.
  Joseph Phelps Insignia
The low-yield 2004 vintage produced a wine with syrupy blackberry and blueberry aromas married with seductive spice, followed by velvety tannins, roundness in the finish and outstanding texture, all of which are superbly integrated.
  Joseph Phelps Le Mistral
The 2005 Le Mistral is suffused with aromas and flavors of cocoa, huckleberry compote, spice and plums, followed by a creamy texture and a long, concentrated finish.
  Joseph Phelps Sauvignon Blanc
The 2006 Sauvignon Blanc has delicate aromas of grapefruit, oily citrus peel, and bergamot underscored by an enticing perfumy linalool scent. Concentrated minerality completes the fresh, balanced, crisp flavors that this wine offers.
  Joseph Phelps Viognier
Lovely apricot and orange blossom aromatics, a rich mouthfeel and great length. We allowed the wine to go through partial malolactic fermentation which contributed to its excellent acid balance and highlighted the purity of our estate-grown fruit.
  Joseph Phelps White Pastiche
This blend of three different white varietals offers aromas of green apple, kaffir lime leaf and lemon grass. While the Sauvignon Blanc adds to the fruity aromas and freshness of this wine, the bit of Chardonnay helps fill out the length, texture and balance.
  Los Carneros Chardonnay
Our 2004 Chardonnay contains the inaugural release of fruit from our new Freestone vineyard in Sonoma County, where in 1999 we purchased and developed 20 acres of Chardonnay. The blending of Freestone and Carneros grapes has yielded a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied wine with aromas of lemon cream, toasty brioche and hazelnut, followed by a long, crisp finish.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Due to the ripeness of the 2004 grape harvest, the final blend for the ‘04 Cabernet boasts ultra concentration and lusciousness. The wine is a striking example of the vintage with aromas of soy, graphite and hints of baking spices, as well as generous amounts of Bing cherry, cassis, and other dark fruits in the fragrant nose. Sweet oak, spice and compelling grapy extract lead to a long, persistent finish.
  Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The dark ruby-colored 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon resembles a classic Bordeaux both in aromatics and flavor. A rich bouquet of cinnamon, spice, licorice, graphite and caramel are followed by integrated layers of cherry, currant, fresh cream and balanced, sweet tannin, all of which contribute to a youthful, bright, multi-layered wine.
  Napa Valley Merlot
Grapes were harvested at an average 25.5° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 18 months in a combination of new French oak barrels (30%) and older French oak (70%), before being bottled in August 2003. The blending of different Napa Valley vineyards has created a classic Merlot with fruit forward intensity. Complex notes of chocolate, graphite, coffee and cinnamon end in a rich, intense velvety finish.
  Napa Valley Merlot
Stunning Napa Valley Merlot, recently named one of Wine & Spirits Top 10 Merlots of 2003! Aromas and flavors of spice and black cherry predominate, with an appealing balance and long, velvety finish. This age worthy wine will bring enjoyment for many years.
  Napa Valley Syrah
Elegant notes of coffee, bacon fat, licorice and white pepper mold the aromatics of the 2005 Syrah. The longer growing season produced balanced black fruit characteristics combined with dried floral notes and complex flavors that contribute to its opulence and length.
  Napa Valley Syrah
The warm 2004 vintage played a critical role in creating this lush, concentrated Syrah. The wine is loaded with white pepper and blueberry jam aromas, with some floral notes in the background resulting from co-fermenting with Viognier. Enticing aromas are followed by a tannic backbone, and a long, lingering finish.
  Napa Valley Syrah
The first thing you notice about the 2003 Syrah is its remarkably deep purple/blue/ color, followed by rich aromas of blackberry, anise, cherry cola and white pepper. On the palate the wine is opulent and spicy with a long, smooth mouth-coating finish.
  Ovation Chardonnay
The 2004 Ovation is packed with melon, citrus oil and wet stone, minerallike aromas. The fruity notes are complemented by savory aromas of hazelnut followed by a rich, full palate that lingers on the finish.
  Red Pastiche
This approachable red wine combines generous, red, spicy fruit aromas with extractive ripe berry flavors and is a perfect choice for barbecues, stews, and spicy-styled dishes. 51% Grenache, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Syrah, 4% Alicante Bouschet, 1% Pinot Noir. The majority of fruit for this blend was estate grown (70%), with the balance coming from independent growers (30%).
  Sauvignon Blanc
The 2005 Sauvignon Blanc has aromatic characteristics ranging from floral and mineral notes to citrus and green melon. The expressive palate is clean and balanced with excellent richness and length.
  Sonoma-Napa Chardonnay
Our 2004 Chardonnay contains the inaugural release of fruit from our new Freestone vineyard in Sonoma County, where in 1999 we purchased and developed 20 acres of Chardonnay. The blending of Freestone and Carneros grapes has yielded a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied wine with aromas of lemon cream, toasty brioche and hazelnut, followed by a long, crisp finish.
  Viognier
Our job in crafting the 2004 wines was to moderate over-ripe characteristics, but from the very beginning the aromas and flavors drifting out of the fermenters signaled outstanding quality, with exceptional fragrance, color and extract. The 2004 whites in particular are concentrated, aromatic and beautifully balanced. We are reminded of the 2002 vintage, which produced wines of forward, concentrated flavors with incredible fragrance, depth and power.
  Viognier
Pleasant, delicate floral aromas and flavors of apricot, sweet orange rind and melon are followed by an oily texture with notes of bright fruit and spice and a rich, lingering finish.
