Coat of the Roan Foal 1
  Duet Sonoma County
50% Semillon / 50% sauvignon blanc. Duet is a California version of a Graves style Bordeaux Blanc, a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Philip first made this wine in the middle 1980s when it quickly developed a cult following, and it continues to do so today. The heart and soul of the wine are the two wonderful vineyards from which it is sourced: Richard Rued's small Semillon vineyards in Dry Creek, and Kent Richie's Poplar Vineyard on the Russian River. Contracts for both vineyards had remained with Philip's previous winery when he left, but he told both growers that if their grapes ever became available, he dearly wanted to work with them again. They did, and Duet was reborn.
  Grenache Russian River Valley
This succulent, rich wine is a product of meticulous work in the vineyard where each year Philip Staley thins half the crop, assuring a low yield of 3 1/2 tons per acre. At the winery, he has tailored a special regimen for the Grenache, including a cold soak of whole clusters and whole berries prior to fermentation. This 100% Grenache has broad, inviting aromas suggesting rose petals and black pepper. Red fruit—cranberry and strawberry—flavors are fresh and forward. Staley's 1997 vintage was the first Grenache to win a gold medal in a major competition in California. Grenache is a versatile wine to be enjoyed in place of a Pinot Noir.
  Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley
Petite Sirah has become a seldom seen wine in recent years, but, at it's best, it demonstrates the intensity of character that has made California wines standouts in the world of wine. This 1998 Petite Sirah has deep purple color with a rich nose of stone fruit and cracked black pepper. The flavors mimic the nose with ripe fruit and pepper with blackberry and that wonderful hint of tar found in the wines of the Rhone. The grapes, grown in the Somers Vineyard, were shown by a DNA analysis to be a true clone of Duriff, the esoteric and mostly forgotten grape of the Southern Rhone Valley. Try this wine, it is not to be missed.
  Semillon Dry Creek Valley
  Syrah Russian River Valley
Philip Staley has the reputation for producing a Syrah that tastes like the full-bodied, Syrah-based wines of the Northern Rhone Valley. Winemaking follows the same hands-on approach used with the Philip Staley Mourvedre. This Syrah, blended with small amounts of Grenache and Viognier, has a deep ruby color and aromas of plum, tar, and pepper. Full on the palate, the wine has a firm structure, seamless balance, and a silky texture.
Viognier Russian River Valley Staley Estate Vineyard
Viognier, the classic white varietal of the grand Condrieu appellation of France’s northern Rhone Valley, makes a truly distinctive white wine. The exotic aromas and flavors of the Viognier grape are prominent in the 2000 vintage, underscored by a pleasant mineral quality, a mark of Staley Vineyards. To preserve the wine's honeysuckle aroma and peach/apricot flavors, Winemaker Philip Staley cold-fermented the juice in stainless steel and avoided malolactic fermentation. Intense and rich without heaviness, this 2000 Viognier has an intriguing note of tangerine in the finish.
