Primitivo, Knights Valley, 2006

Primitivo, Knights Valley, 2006 Wine Details
Price: $40.00 per bottle

Description: Primitivo is the Italian version of a Zinfandel, which was proven in the last decade or so by the researchers at UC Davis using genetic DNA testing on the vines. Our spicy wine varietal is from the warmest local climate situated in Knights Valley. Aromas of boysenberry, honey, and vanilla transform at each sip with the smoky flavors of coffee and tobacco with lingering tannins and a bit of raspberry. Upon finishing this medium-bodied wine, the finish follows up the palate with notes of fruit and spice. A wonderful addition to any Italian feast, this bottle drinks wonderfully with tomato-based sauces and hearty grilled meats.

Varietal Definition
Primitivo:
Recent "DNA" testing has shown Primitivo to possess the exact same genetic make up as the popular California grape, Zinfandel. Both varieties origins are tracked back to Croatia. And while the grapes may be identical in theory, the wines they produce have distinct differences. Primitivo's home province is Apuglia (sometimes called Puglia), located in the "heel" of Italy's boot. Wines made from Primitivo have notes of plum and spice, like Zinfandel, but because of different growing soils and climate, the fruit character is less jammy, the structure more akin to old world wines, with rustic notes of earth and spice, as well as tamed fruit flavors.
