Merlot, Sonoma Valley, 2005

Merlot, Sonoma Valley, 2005 Wine Details
Price: $44.00 per bottle

Description: If Merlot was the first varietal worthy of carrying the Ledson name on our inaugural bottles in 1993, the Sonoma Valley Merlot must be more than just an ordinary vineyard. Savor the aroma of succulent yet sweet cherries that can take you back to grandma’s kitchen as she pulls the cherry pie from the oven. The first sip makes you remember why you love California’s perfect growing climate and rich, volcanic soil as you take in the lush fruit flavors, smooth texture, and lingering spices that would pair wonderfully with a great grilled cut of meat or a hearty round of appetizers. If you would rather not open it at your next dinner party, you can save this bottle for a special occasion—as it will appreciate for 10 more years, you have plenty of time—and you will not be disappointed.

Varietal Definition
Merlot:
Merlot is known as a Noble Bordeaux varietal. Although it came to France in the first century, it was not named until the 1880s. Merlot was originally used only for blending, as it is soft and compliant, very useful in softening other Bordeaux wines like Cabernets. Recently in California and Chile it became popular as a 100% varietal wine. Merlot tends to be easier to grow in a variety of soil conditions and is harvested earlier in the year than Cabernet. Although most Merlots are made to be drunk earlier, there are many with complexities of a Cabernet. Flavors of plum, black cherry, violet, chocolate and orange pair well with rich, red pasta dishes, hearty chicken dishes, and any beef combination that you fancy. The perfect match of course is chocolate. Not only does the chocolate compliment the wine and vice-versa, but the essence of both flavors linger eternally.
