Viognier, Elephant Mountain Vineyard, Yakima Valley

Viognier, Elephant Mountain Vineyard, Yakima Valley Wine Details
Price: $16.00 per bottle

Description: The high elevation, basalt soils and windswept exposure at the impeccably managed Elephant Mountain Vineyard provided us with incredible fruit for the 2004 vintage. Viognier, a noble white varietal that originates from southern Rhone, grows well in the Yakima Valley, thriving in our long hot summer days and developing complexities and good natural acidity levels with our cold high dessert evening temperatures. Note the thickness of the wine as you swirl it in the glass and the aromas of tropical fruit, white peach sorbet, and kiwi. In the mouth flows a wave of similar fruits, Yakima dust, and subtleties of white chocolate and buttered sautéed bananas. This well balanced full-bodied white wine finishes long into tongue teasing acidity. 100 cases produced. Try with mango chutney smothered chicken breast or enjoy as a chilled aperitif wine. PPW 10/05

Varietal Definition
Viognier:
The most acclaimed white wine grape from France's Rhône Valley, Viognier is a highly aromatic varietal, with a flavor profile that could include peach, apricot, nectarine, lichee, musk and flower blossom. The heady perfume of this varietal is one of its trademarks, although its flavors are sometimes problematic in matching with food. However, it does well with lobster, crab and moderately flavored fish. Use it as an apéritif as an alternative to Chardonnay. The "Rhône Rangers" in California have done an excellent job promoting this varietal.
