Description:
To us, the 2003 seems very much like our 1998 was at the same stage in its life. It’s a very spicy wine with more white pepper than we’ve noted in any previous vintage. We won’t attempt to give you detailed tasting notes because, as Sean Thackrey says, that would be like reviewing your own movie. And besides, we find it agonizingly difficult to describe our own wine. We’ll gladly leave that to others. Our job is to get the flavor of our vineyard into the bottle. We picked the grapes on September 18 and 28, fermented them in T-bins and punched down by hand. The fermen-tation finished in ten days and we pressed the wine one day later. The wine was aged in four-times used François Frères barrels for 18 months, during which it was racked three times, and bottled on June 21, 2005. As always, the wine is unfiltered and all from our own vineyard. 770 cases made.

Varietal Definition
Syrah:
Syrah is the eight hundred pound gorilla of Rhone grapes! In the vineyard and the winery, Syrah is typically an easy grape to work with - healthy, early ripening, resistant to mildew and rot; suitable for winemaking in a variety of styles. The wines from Syrah are tannic without being harsh. The wines will have a taste and smell of dark blue fruit like blackberries and blackcurrant, with a strong spicy side where one can find freshly ground pepper and other spices. Syrah is famous for its part in the French blends, such as Côtes du Rhone and Châteauneuf du Pape.
