Petite Sirah Port

Petite Sirah Port Wine Details
Price:

Description: This vintage of our Petite Sirah Port was sourced from a ranch just south of the Bogle homestead known as the “Quick Ranch.” Planted in 1995, this ranch is home to 30 acres of petite sirah vines. Selected rows of these vines were not harvested with the rest, allowing the grapes to ripen to 26.5 degrees brix before being selectively handpicked for the Petite Sirah Port on September 24, 2003. At 15 degrees brix, fortification occurred and fermentation was halted. The result was our Petite Sirah Port with an alcohol of 20% and a residual sugar of 9.4%. The newly made port was aged in neutral French and American oak barrels for 18 months. This year’s vintage displays the complex aromas of raspberry and plum with undercurrents of blackberry jam hiding beneath. Mid-palate the toasty oak subtly asserts itself for just a moment before ebbing away into the fruit characters. The finish is smooth with touches of leather, chocolate and a pinch of pipe tobacco.

Varietal Definition
Petite Sirah:
Petite Sirah is the same as the French variety known as Durif, a cross of Peloursin, with the true Syrah. A French nurseryman, Dr. François Durif, propagated the grape trying for resistance to powdery mildew and named it after himself, in the 1870s. Petite Sirah has long been an important blending grape, prized primarily for its deep color and fairly intense tannin. It is the variety most often chosen to blend into Zinfandel for added color, complexity, body, and to tone down the tendency of Zins toward "jammy" fruit.
