Description:
The 2001 growing season started with a relatively normal budbreak, less than usual rainfall and only one night of severe frost, on April 1st. Bloom and fruit set followed in May with drier, warmer temperatures but not excessive heat. The following June and July were cool and the absence of severe heat spikes (over 1040) which had overly stressed vines in previous seasons, ensured that grapevines and fruit entered veraison and progressed to maturation at a more even rate, with greater development of flavors. Harvest began the third week of August and extended to the first week of October and in contrast to the three previous vintages, was notable for the continuous, even flow of ripening fruit into the winery. Although variation in yields among the different varieties occurred, the overall harvest reflected good yields of excellent fruit quality.
