Igneous Wines

Igneous Wines Don and Ann Huckfeldt, longtime Napa Valley residents, created Igneous Wines after they were able to secure some Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Thorevilos Vineyard, a vineyard owned and operated by David Abreu in St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. Rounding out the production team are Nils Venge and his son Kirk. Nils has crafted some of Napa Valley's most outstanding and memorable wines and he was the first American to make a wine that received a perfect 100 point score from the internationally renowned wine critic Robert Parker, Jr. Kirk Venge is an extremely talented young winemaker, who was born and raised in the Napa Valley. Kirk followed in his father Nils’ footsteps, securing a degree in enology at the University of California, Davis. Don has always had a passion for geology and especially volcanic rock formations – he owns a water-well drilling company, which has given him an appreciation for the composition of the soil and terroir of the Napa Valley. Therefore, “Igneous” seemed to be the perfect name for his wines.

  Igneous Cabernet Sauvignon
“… a wonderful, deep raspberry hue with a light viscosity that clings to the glass. The aromatics are nicely layered with an entry of ripe cherry and black fruit preserves that continues to reveal nuances of cedar, clove, sandalwood incense and underlying barrel vanillan. The presence of new oak is elegant and not overpowering. The initial cherry aromas are easily identifiable as the first flavor in a conglomerated red fruit profile. The weight of the wine from start to middle is firm and balanced with dusty tannin coating the mouth. The acidity and tannin balance carries off the mid palate for a long, gentle finish of red fruits, white pepper and a hint of tobacco. Cellared correctly, this wine should drink very well between 2006 and 2018.” -Kirk Venge, Winemaker
  Igneous Cabernet Sauvignon
“This wine eclipses nearly the entirety of the red fruit spectrum! In an instant, feminine and elegant plush, ripe red cherry and red berry fruits lift from the glass. A bit deeper in the aromatic, a light pepper spice surfaces. On the palate, bright black cherry surrounds a delicate vanillin core and the oak undertones support and package the entire experience. This Cabernet shows wonderful and seamless tannin/acid structure from the first entry on the palate all the way to the back of the finish. While clearly still showing its youth, the overall effect of this Cabernet is pure elegance, with a harmonious balance that makes this wine a pleasure to drink.” -Kirk Venge, Winemaker
