Jodar Vineyards & Winery

Jodar Vineyards & Winery Overlooking the sheer American River Canyon below, the steeply terraced Jodar vineyard is located near the edge of El Dorado National Forest at 2,400 feet elevation. The Jodar family literally blasted the vineyard from the granite hillside in 1985 to launch a journey, which is still in progress. In the spring of 1986 the task of carving terraces in the steep and rocky terrain was completed, and a small army of friends and relatives was recruited to plant the first 4,200 vines. The race to erect the winery in time for the first crush in 1990 was won by the grapes, as Mother Nature insisted upon the earliest harvest ever, and the first vintage of Jodar Cabernet Sauvignon was created in a winery without a ceiling or walls. (ATF endorsed this unusual circumstance with good humor . . once the tank valves were secured with steel locking devices.) In March 1997 the tasting room was relocated from the remoteness of the vineyard site to the neighboring "Apple Hill" area of Camino, California. The proximity to U.S. 50 is greatly appreciated by our fans whose collector T-shirts ("I survived the trip to Jodar") were well earned prior to the move. The original plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay produce about 3,000 cases of wine annually. In 1995 a world-class Port joined the Estate Bottled lineup, with Zinfandel added to production in 1997 and Sangiovese in 1999. More acreage waits to be developed, along with more varieties to be mastered.

Directions
The tasting room is located in Camino at the historic Camino Hotel, just off Highway 50 at the Camino exit, in the heart of Apple Hill.

  2001 Apollo's Lyre (Estate Reserve)
A Bordeaux blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was aged in small oak cooperage for 24 months. Pronounced anise/licorice notes in the nose with black cherry, black raspberry and cassis. Complex, with hints of almond, vanilla and brown spices. Foothills earthiness carries through to the mouth with black cherry. Elegant and very well balanced with bright acid and round tannins. Medals awarded: Long Beach Grand Cru, Amenti del Vino Int'l and VinoChallenge Int'l.
  2001 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Quintessentially Jodar. Black raspberry, boysenberry and plum in the nose, along with that definite "Jodar Spice" of licorice and allspice. Big black fruit flavors in the mouth, adding black cherry and subtle lavender notes. Finishes with black cherry, boysenberry and youthful cedar aromatics.
  Cabernet Franc
Sparkling ruby-red color. Spicy nose with violets, vanilla, and black fruits. Soft entry of blackberry cobbler on the palate. Rounded and well-balanced with a finsih of vanilla and cinnamon.
  Chardonnay
Whole cluster press(50%) and aged on the lees for creamy smoothness. Bouquet of tropical fruit, melon, and vanilla. Full-bodied, this wine delights the palate with spiced pineapple and melon fruit linked with toasty French oak notes.
  Elva
Elva" is derived from the Old English word for "elf". It is also the name of our diminutive mother Elva Jodar. This sprightly, off-dry white wine has a kiss of muscat which gives it a mouth-watering apricot aroma. Medium bodied with a crisp, clean finish, this is a wonderful summer sipper with fruit and cheese. It is also excellent with hot and spicy Asian cuisine..
  Merlot
Our First Merlot. Inky color and smokey-toasty bouquet bright fruit. Big, dark fruit and vanilla on the palate combine for "cherry pie" impression. Aromatic finish with cedar and herbs.
  Port
If you know about Port, you may know about this one. Festooned with gobs of medals every year, Jodar Port is released in April and sold out by Christmas. The most common characteristics are spiced fruit—some years black cherry, others raspberry—and a chocolate cloak.
  Sangiovese
A Sangiovese lover's Sangio. Classic Sangiovese: Strawberry color and a nose of strawberry jam with cedar and hints of cranberry. Juicy cranberry fruit on the palate along with fresh strawberries and citrus zest. Light tannins and a very long, smooth finish with a hint of smoke.
  Zinfandel
Bright ruby color. Aromas of balck cherry with nuances of spice inc;luding flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cedar. And a loooog foothill finish that sings the praises of the foothill Zinfandel!
