Ravenswood Winery

Ravenswood Winery For as long as anybody cares to remember, this has been the credo (calling card? Battle cry? Team yell? Coat of arms?) of Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, California. Expressing our commitment to full-flavored varietal wine — notably Zinfandel — it sums up our mission to capture everything a vineyard has to offer, and to promote it in a way that won't put people to sleep. Wine is, after all, one of the most fascinating and fun things in life, which is why Ravenswood winemaker Joel Peterson believes that it belongs on the table — not on a pedestal or in an ivory tower. How did the name of Ravenswood become interchangeable with irresistibility? In the early 1970s, when California's claim to fame was the "best jug wine in the world," Joel's dream was to create wines that would rival the greatest of Europe. Turned out he wasn't dreaming: In his first vintage, 1976, he produced 327 cases of Dry Creek Zin that took first place in a prestigious San Francisco tasting. But despite the cult following and critical acclaim that began to swirl around its hypnotic logo, Ravenswood remained a roving boutique until the late 1980s, when its Vintners Blend program was launched. Conceived on Joel's conviction that, besides great wine, the world needs good, affordable wine ("a lake of wine an inch deep"), it redefined the concept of Best Jug Wine in the World. Thanks to this and a few other things (not least, its tireless campaign against priggish elitism), Ravenswood acquired an informal reputation as the people's premium winery. In 1999 the company went public with a "Dutch auction" of shares offered over the Internet, and two years later Ravenswood was purchased by Constellation Brands, becoming part of its fine-wine division, Franciscan Estates — a productive partnership that kept the winery under Joel's control while providing greater resources for efficient operation and growth. The picture has changed a bit since 1976. Following the original inspiration of wineries like Ravenswood, California has now shirked its once-wimpy status to a fault. But the more things change around our Sonoma headquarters, the more they stay the same. In this brave new enologically altered world, Ravenswood continues to set a stubborn standard for complex, balanced, uncompromising wine that captures everything a vineyard has to offer (and, we might add, nothing more).

  Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel
Rich, soft and spicy on the palate, with ripe plum, blueberry and pepper notes.
  Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel
Mature vines lend this sumptuous Zinfandel its character. Bursting with concentrated blueberry and spice flavors, it’s the culmination of old vines growing in Lodi’s well-drained sandy soils. These special vineyards produce low yields—only two and a half tons per acre—and the intense characteristics are the signature qualities of Ravenswood old vine Zinfandel. Add to that, 18 months spent aging in new and used French oak barrels and the result is a round, zaftig wine filled with notes of vanilla and toasted spices that linger on the finish and in memory. The 2003 Lodi is particularly bright and fruity with a soft, ripe roundness and well balanced acidity that should make this wine a pleasure to consume by itself or with a great meal.
  Ravenswood Merlot Estate
The Ravenswood Estate Merlot is grown across the lane from the Ravenswood tasting room on Gehricke Road. The vines are young, almost ten, but already producing well-structured wines. It resounds with full, ripe, round and supple blackberry and vanilla flavors supported by the bright, flashy qualities that make Merlot from the Carneros region unique. While the wine is enjoyable now, it will be fully integrated in about one year and continue to develop favorably for another decade.

  Ravenswood Rancho Salina
Meritage
  Ravenswood Rancho Salina Vineyard
A blend of 63% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Rancho Salina, like its cross-valley cousin Pickberry, profited very nicely from the favorable conditions of the 2000 vintage. The result is a beautiful, deeply colored complex wine, stylishly reminiscent of a well-crafted Pomerol or St. Emilion.
  Ravenswood Rancho Salina Vineyard
As rich in texture as in flavor, this is a wine built for the longer term (10 or more years) but to try a bottle young is to enjoy luscious, lively, dark berry fruit with a hint of herb and more than a hint of oak (smoke, tar, spice).
  Ravenswood Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay
The 2002 Sangiacomo Chardonnay shows the bright, high tone fruit that is characteristic with this vintage. It is also characteristic of the Sangiacomo Vineyard, with the roundness associated with toasty malolactic flavors and long bright finish associated with Carneros fruit. The flavors of French oak and citrus linger on the palate long after the wine has been swallowed.
  Ravenswood Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon
Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon is made to be aged. The wine is fermented for three to four weeks on the skins, allowing them to macerate even after the cap has sunk — a treatment that produces a lean, intense, well-structured, wine. The somewhat austere Cabernet is softened with Merlot and brightened with Cabernet Franc; up to two years in French oak adds a smoky, vanilla character. The resulting blend, which in some years is rather slow to develop, is always flavorful and complex, with an aromatic, spicy, brambly, mint quality and a slightly astringent finish. It will develop elegant bottle bouquet and aroma with eight to ten years of aging. It offers an incredible value for a top flight Cabernet.
  Ravenswood Sonoma County Cabernet Franc

It resounds with full, ripe, round and supple blackberry and vanilla flavors supported by the bright, flashy qualities that make Merlot from the Carneros region unique. While the wine is enjoyable now, it will be fully integrated in about one year and continue to develop favorably for another decade.

It is classically proportioned and well crafted.

The wine is dark in color, intensely spicy with an overlay of ripe strawberries and black raspberries. It has a density and concentration that is found only in wines made from old, deep-rooted vines. The flavors are full and the finish is complex but lively with a long mouthwatering finish that makes this wine a beautiful compliment to food or a pleasure to drink by itself. An unsung variety that really performs for those who are looking for adventure.
