Crawford Family Wines - Buellton
|
|
Crawford Family Wines embraces the "garagiste" style of winemaking by producing tiny lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah that provide a glimpse into the unique Sta. Rita Hills vineyards they come from. Striving for authenticity in varietal character and a sense of place, we employ a minimalist approach to winemaking and let the fruit do the talking.
Centrally located in Buellton, we are a winery well worth seeking out. Come taste micro-production lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Rhone varietals in an authentic industrial winemaking space.

Grenache “Larner Vineyard” Santa Ynez Valley
This wine is a blend of 88% Grenache, clone 362, and 12% Syrah, clone 383. We used 100% neutral oak barrels. The color is ruby red with just a touch of purple from the Syrah. The nose is bursting with sweet cherry aromas, a hint of kirsch liqueur, and a touch of cedar wood in the background. The palate is incredibly rich and sweet with cherries dominating. The finish is one of soft tannins and well-balanced acidity.

Pinot Noir “Babcock Vineyard” Santa Rita Hills
Dark ruby in color, dark fruit and black cherry vie for attention with Asian spices and that tell tale Santa Rita Hills earthy, peppery, slate character. The aromas from the glass are confirmed on the palate and are wrapped neatly in a rich but mouthwatering blanket of sweet fruit and well-balanced acid. Fine tannins keep the finish long and firm enough to ensure 5-7 years of aging potential.

Pinot Noir “Turner Vineyard” Santa Rita Hills
This Pinot is a gorgeous, ruby red in color. The wine has inviting aromatics of bright red fruit, rose petals, a hint of new oak, and classic Santa Rita Hills spice. The aromatics continue on the palate, which is full of bright cherry fruit framed by hints of toasty oak and dark earthy spice. The finish shows incredible strength, beyond this vineyard's young years, and gives us confidence that we chose a great new source for Pinot Noir in the Santa Rita Hills.

Rose “Larner Vineyard” Santa Ynez Valley
The color is a salmon pink to very light red. The aromas from the glass are intense fresh strawberry mixed with a little spicy red fruit. The palate is full of strawberries as well and the sweetness and acidity play a big part in keeping the wine fresh, bright and mouthwatering. This is a wine to be consumed cold, early and often; however, we are still drinking some final bottles of our 2004 and we find it delicious and more complex than it was in its youth. We hope you pick some up and that it helps to brighten a spring or summer afternoon. Enjoy!

Syrah "Four Play"
|
Syrah “Purisima Mountain Vineyard” Santa Ynez Valley
|
Syrah “Turner Vineyard” Santa Rita Hills
The nose presents the most engaging aroma of freshly cracked black pepper, blueberries, blackberries, a hint of oak and from the stems an earthy, wet pebble/stone component. On the palate this wine reminds me a bit more of the Northern Rhône than California. Never overpowering but sleek and juicy with all of the aforementioned flavors coming through. The wine finishes long and refreshing with a final burst of that fresh pepper that was so enticing on the nose. Our only regret is that we couldn't make more.
