Mahoney Vineyards

Mahoney Vineyards Mahoney Vineyards is the culmination of 35 years of experience growing and producing wines in the Carneros region spanning the cool southern reaches of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Francis and Kathy Mahoney invite you to enjoy the uniqueness of their wines, carefully crafted in small quantities from the very best of their 160 acres of estate vineyards.

Less than an hour’s drive north of San Francisco, Highway 12/121 slices across the Carneros region, stretching west from Napa Valley toward Sonoma. A few miles west of Napa’s Highway 29, a sharp right turn onto Old Sonoma Road leads across Carneros Creek on a century-old bridge. After a quick left on Dealy Lane, Mahoney Vineyards is just a grapevine-lined mile up ahead.

Gavin Vineyard, named for Kathy’s family, comprises two blocks adjacent to the winery. These vines produce low yields of fruit with concentrated flavors. We harvested into small bins and went directly to press with whole clusters to minimize handling. Gentle pressing, a short settling period and barrel fermentation with a wide array of yeasts helped create complexity while preserving fruit character. Extended aging sur lie added richness and helped integrate French oak notes with the fruit. This complex wine has forward citrus and Granny Smith apple notes layered with yeasty toast and sweet oak.
  Pinot Noir
The best of our 40 lots of Pinot Noir from Mahoney Ranch and Las Brisas Vineyard are blended into this complex wine, showcasing seven distinct clones grown in diverse microclimates and soils. The wine displays wonderfully structured mouthfeel accompanied by layer upon layer of abundant red fruit flavors and varietal spice.
In 2003, our Edge Club members, like you, were the first to be introduced to this new varietal from Mahoney Vineyards. At that time, we had to explain what, Vermentino is, as well as why, Francis and Kathy would plant it at their Las Brisas Vineyard. We have received a fantastic response from you, as well as the press. Vermentino continues to be one of Francis’ and Ken’s favorites. This wine exhibits white peaches, citrus flavors with lovely floral notes. The refreshing and crisp finish is a perfect compliment to any spring or summer gathering. Enjoy with bread and cheese, your favorite shellfish, or just as an aperitif.
