Guy Drew Vineyards

Guy Drew Vineyards We found this beautiful property southwest of Cortez after searching for several years while maintaining our corporate careers in Denver. Beginning in 1998, we transformed a homestead hay farm in McElmo Canyon that we purchased in October 1997 into vineyards and built our straw bale winery and home. Our mission here is to make distinctive premium wines from our vineyards and offer a memorable experience for visitors to our winery in this enchanting corner of Colorado. McElmo Canyon is the southwest arm of Montezuma Valley on the Colorado Plateau west of the Rocky Mountains and was an ancient Anasazi trade route and historical fruit-growing region in Colorado. McElmo Creek runs through this narrow 21-mile long valley from Montezuma Valley on the east to the San Juan River in Utah on the west. The Ute Mountain Ute Reservation and legendary volcanic Sleeping Ute Mountain rises to nearly 10,000’ south of our farm, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument begins below the rimrock on the north and Mesa Verde provides spectacular vistas to the east.

Directions
Hwy 491 & 160 south of Cortez, turn west at M&M Truckstop. 4.2 miles west on Road G on north side.

Products

  Guy Drew Vineyards Chardonnay
This wine is very fruity. Starting with the ripe lemon and banana aromas then pear and kiwi fruit, mango and a taste of honey. It has nice acidity and a lot of weight on the palate. The color is a light straw yellow and is our favorite summer white that doesn't loose anything at fridge temperature.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Gewurztraminer
Our Gewurztraminer is almost dry in a style at 1% residual sugar. It has floral, rose and citrus aromas and flavors of honey, dried fruit, lemon peel and spicy nutmeg and allspice. This wine has a silky texture with lively acidity to balance the mouth feel with a rather dry finish. Enjoy on it's own or with your favorite spicy dishes. Great with roast turkey or a pork roast.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Meritage
This blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc and 22% Petit Verdot was barrel aged in two and three year old French oak for twelve months, then four months in new French oak. Bright fruit, balanced acidity and tannins give this wine great aging potential.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Merlot
Bright cherry and strawberry fruit dominate this easy drinking wine. Having 12 months in older French oak barrels give the wine structure without overpowering oak flavors. Perfect as an everyday wine that pairs with most foods.
  Guy Drew Vineyards NV Port
This fortified wine was made from Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot. It is medium bodied with a warm and creamy mouth feel and flavors of dark berry, cherry and mocha with a long finish. This Port will improve with age, but is ready now. 500ML
Guy Drew Vineyards Riesling - Russell Vineyards
The grapes for this wine are grown at 6,800' elevation on a farm owned by Bill and Denise Russell. The vineyard was planted where an organic apple orchard stood six years ago. The Lebanon area north of Cortez in the Montezuma Valley has the potential to be one of the best high altitude growing areas in Colorado. The wine is just off-dry and is bright with a green apple tint in color. It has fruit flavors of lemon grass, pear and tart apple. The finish lingers with nice acidity suited for Asian and other spicy foods.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Rose
This rose is made from Cabernet Franc grapes that give it aromas and flavor of cherry and strawberry. Pressed after three fermentations, contributed to it's silky mouth feel without loosing the backbone of it's acidity.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Sweet Merlot
After a week on the skins, we pressed the Merlot grapes and continued the long, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks until stopping it with just the right amount of sweetness. This process gave the wine a deep red color. With aromas of blueberry on the nose, the palate is all fruit, dominated by blueberry then strawberry, cherry and red plum. It has a soft and rich cream texture with a bit of vanilla at mid-palate.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Syrah
Spicy aromas, mouth-watering bright berry flavors, balanced acidity and a peppery, slightly smokey finish. Pair with Colorado Lamb, spicy grilled chicken and any kind of BBQ.
  Guy Drew Vineyards Viognier
This Viognier is clear and golden in color. It has flowery aromas with full bodied and rich mouth-feel, flavors of peach, pear, tropical fruit and a hint of spice. Great with Thai, Chinese or Mexican dishes, salty cheeses, strong flavored fish dishes, pork, chicken and fresh fruit.
