Hunting Hawk Winery

Hunting Hawk Winery Welcome to B.C.'s newest--and--oldest winery. The best of old and new come together at Hunting Hawk Winery at O'Keefe Ranch. The ranch was established in 1860 and was the commercial, social and cultural hub of the North Okanagan for more than a century. Our new winery is part of the restoration of this beautiful historic site to the status it enjoyed in its heyday. Hunting Hawk has planted two acres of Ortega (white) and Marechal Foch grapes on a well drained, fertile bench on the north side of the 64-acre O'Keefe property. A fully functional winery has been established in one of the Ranch buildings and our tasting and sales area occupies a portion of the Gift Shop. Soon (subject to licensing approval) we will be opening a wine garden picnic area, where patrons can enjoy our wine as well as local cheese from the Village Cheese Co. and other fine products from local farms and cottage industries. Also, check out our selection of wine accessories and souvenir items. Tastings are free and scheduled tours of the vineyard and winery are included with admission to the Ranch. Tour buses and large groups are welcome.

  2002 Marechal Foch
Special handling of this interesting grape has resulted in a velvety smooth and round wine with huge cherry and berry flavours and a hint of vanilla. The wine is deeply opaque with a lovely violet nose. We suggest pairing our Foch with Italian dishes, ragouts, pork or a barbecued burger. It's also a great sipping wine on its own. Best within two years, it never lasts that long, anyway. 2000 Foch (sold out) named BEST RED WINE at Vernon Winter Carnival People's Choice Awards.
  2003 Blanc de Noir
A beautiful strawberry nose give way to a well balanced, fruity and well structured blush. This is the real thing, free run Pinot Noir juice gathered quickly from the press with a minimum of skin contact and then fermented and aged without oak to allow the fresh fruit to come through. Chill and enjoy on its own (a hot tub comes to mind) or pair with kabobs or tandoori.
  2003 Chardonnay (unwooded)
We were fully prepared to make this Chardonnay in the traditional way with French oak but when we smelled the intensely fruity bouquet and tasted the crisp apple, pear and fruit salad combinations we couldn't bring ourselves to tamper with Mother Nature's creation. The malolactic fermentation has softened the acid and lent a buttery richness to the finish that reminds you it's time for another sip. So perfect with wild B.C. salmon.
  2003 Gewurztraminer
This is how Gewurztraminer was meant to be, dry with intense spice and fruit and a soft finish without a trace of bitterness. Prominent lychee flavours give way to undertones of pineapple, mango and fresh peach. Our best selling white and no wonder. Lovely on its own and delicious with creamy cheeses, Asian dishes and spicy stir frys.
  2003 Merlot
The grapes for this stunning wine come from a south-facing slope on a plateau above Okanagan Falls. The intense heat of the pocket desert brings this noble grape to its full ripeness for a big, dry wine with a cavalcade of blackberry, cassis and soft oak flavours. This Merlot is ready to be enjoyed but will improve over six years. Game, lamb, prime rib and your favourite steak will mellow this wine in your mouth and bring the fruit to its full intensity. The satiny finish lasts and lasts. Delicious!
2003 White Port Style Dessert Wine
So rare and so good. Rather than fortifying, we add sugar to the fermenting Pinot Blanc to increase the alcohol and add lingering sweetness to the well-balanced, luscious medley of apples, pears and soft fruits. Made in small quantities and not always available but worth the hunt! Try a sip after dinner or add to a dessert sauce. Yum.
