Molnar Family Wines Our wine adventure started back in the late 1960’s when Nicholas Molnar “discovered” Napa Valley. The wines of Napa reminded him of his homeland of Hungary (from which he had just managed to escape Communist rule in 1956), he decided that “this was the place” and began buying land and developing vineyards throughout Napa Valley. In 1973, he developed Poseidon’s Vineyard, in the Carneros appellation of Napa. This was at a time when there were mostly sheep grazing in that part of the valley, and we’re sure some people thought he was a bit crazy to plant vines there. But his hunch that the region would produce stellar wines was correct, and for over 30 years we have been supplying premium grapes to wineries such as Joseph Phelps, Heitz Cellars, Sterling, Pride Mountain, Acacia, and Mumm Napa Valley. Then the Molnar sons came along, and as they “know everything better” (this is a direct quote), they partnered up with Michael Terrien to make some small batches of choice wines from land that they had tended for the past generation. Molnar Family wine was born to make cool-climate single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the very southern end of Napa Valley. We also set out to re-invent the style a bit – we wanted the taste of fruit without the candy and oakey finish of many California Chardonnays. We emphasize balance and structure to “make you change the way you think about Chardonnay”.

  Molnar Family Chardonnay
We harvested this single-vineyard Chardonnay on two dates from our Poseidon's Vineyard property in Carneros. The first pick was in mid-October when the grapes were robust and exuberant with bright flavors. The later pick on October 26th did not result in appreciably riper grapes - at least by sugar measurement (25 brix) - but the flavors had continued to develop and deepen in tone. Whole-cluster pressed, the chardonnay was fermented in Budapesti Kadar's Tokaj oak barrels, and a small portion was tank fermented to add a fresh citrus flavor component. Already appealing in its youth, the finished wine is intensely aromatic with the sweet-smelling floral aromas of tuberose and jasmine. Riper tones of honey and baked pineapple lay the foundation and compelling citrus elements mingle with crusty fresh bread and the smell of cedar and balsam fir. This is not in any way a restrained wine, despite the limited use of new oak. To be enjoyed through 2009.
  Molnar Family Pinot Noir
We harvested the grapes September 13th at 24.1 Brix, with acidity of 6.9g/L and pH 3.29 from our Poseidon's Vineyard property in Carneros. The fermentations were conducted in open-top fermenters with punchdowns performed 3 times daily at peak with maceration extending to 15 days. The young wine was drained and pressed to 34% new Budapesti Kadar Tokaj oak barrels from the premium Hungarian cooperage also owned by the Molnar family. The wine was barrel aged for nearly a year. Very appealing in its youth, this Pinot Noir is characterized by cocoa powder and ripe plum. It is not an exaggerated ripe style, and the color is brilliant if not dark - all the while terrifically fragrant and inviting. Moderate tannins help to define the supple texture to keep it from being simply sweet - similar to the effect the pit has on the plum. This wine will age well for 8 years.
