Col Solare Wines

Col Solare Wines Piero Antinori, 26th generation Italian winemaker, was enthusiastically introduced to Washington's Columbia Valley wines by none other than legendary Napa Valley winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. After tasting some of the wines and seeing some of the vineyards, Piero sought out the winemaking team at Chateau Ste. Michelle to discuss potential partnerships. The Col Solare winemaking team includes Ron Bunnell, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s head red winemaker, and Renzo Cotarello, head winemaker for Antinori, who oversees the production of the Antinori portfolio including those wonderful Tuscan brands Tignanello, Cervaro della Sala, Guado al Tasso and Solaia. The team works together on every aspect of the winemaking – from vineyards to the final blend. Typical to Antinori’s iconoclastic style, the blend often contains a small portion of Syrah in what would otherwise be considered a traditional Bordeaux blend. Col Solare (which is Italian for “shining hill”) was first introduced with the 1995 vintage. Since its inception, some vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills have distinguished themselves in the Col Solare blend, and others have been planted specifically to make this wine. Muscular Washington Cabernet grapes from Red Mountain vineyards are starting to contribute more significantly to the blend, and this is likely to increase in future vintages.

  Col Solare Red Blend
Intense and ripe aromas of black fruit, dried fig, cedar and sweet spice mingle with rich flavors of blackberry and hints of vanilla. Round and refined tannins create a structure that is both rich and fullbodied with a bright lasting finish.
