J. Kirkwood Winery

J. Kirkwood Winery J. Kirkwood Winery (formerly Reid Family Vineyards) was founded in 1992 with the planting of a small Napa Valley vineyard in the foothills of Mt. Veeder. The estate was originally homesteaded in 1880 as a prune ranch and the original barn still remains as a silent reminder of that era. The vineyard is closely spaced, vertically trellised, and aggressively managed. Since the clay soils and climate were reminiscent of the Pomerol region, merlot was chosen for the three acre vineyard. Between 1996 and 2002, our wine was custom crushed at Luna Vineyards and Havens Wine Cellars. The wine, called J. Kirkwood, is made using barrel-to-barrel racking techniques without filtration or fining. It is literally hand crafted and nurtured through each step of the winemaking process. In 2003, we celebrated the completion of our own production facility and Reid Family Vineyards became J. Kirkwood Winery. Since our winemaker had spent several years working at Dominus and Chateau Petrus, the winery was modeled after the small family chateaux of France. One hundred percent French oak and the best Napa Valley grapes are used to produce about 1000 cases of J. Kirkwood each year. The philosophy of winemaking at J. Kirkwood Winery consistently leads to a memorable wine experience. Attention to detail at each level produces a wine that is full-bodied, rich, and luxurious. J. Kirkwood a most extraordinary wine!

  The J.Kirkwood Merlot
The 2002 Merlot was made from the Carneros vineyards of Tony Truchard and Larry Hyde. Additional merlot and cabernet franc were added from the Yountville vineyards of Dominus Estates. It is a deeply colored wine exhibiting a nose of red cherries and violets. Fruity flavors initially greet the palate and are followed by a silkiness produced by rich tannins. A lingering finish rounds out the taste experience.
  The J.Kirkwood Merlot
The 2001 Merlot was made using grapes from Ken Laird's Rutherford vineyard and Larry Hyde's Carneros vineyard. It has a rich color and a nose of jam and black cherries. The tannins are silky and the oak is well integrated. It should drink well for several years.
