Ken Brown Wines

Ken Brown Wines Life has a way of coming full circle. This could not ring more true as I embark on my latest endeavor, Ken Brown Wines. This venture has led me back to the vineyards, the wines and the excitement that brought me to Santa Barbara County in the first place nearly 30 years ago. My first experience with Pinot Noir in what is now known as the Santa Rita Hills came in 1976 when I met Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict and tasted one of the first Pinot Noirs from the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. I now realize what a profound moment that was in my life as the amazing qualities of that wine were a window to the future, which compelled me to stay and devote my career to the area. In the years since then, I have continued to explore the tremendous potential of Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County, experimenting with clones, rootstocks, terroir and winemaking techniques. In the 20 years I spent as founder and winemaker at Byron Vineyard & Winery in Santa Maria Valley, I relished each vintage, consistently pursuing the elusive traits that make great Pinot Noir. This new venture, Ken Brown Wines, is born of my inspiration from the past, and moreover, my passion for the future. Experience tells me that far greater achievements lie ahead—especially in the Santa Rita Hills—and it is in that spirit that I renew the quest for the next echelon of quality in Pinot Noir.

Ken Brown Chardonnay, Santa Maria Valley
This Chardonnay is silky and rich with fresh aromas of golden delicious apple, pear, white peach and honey accented by hints of cinnamon, clove and a mineral, seashell component. A framework of crisp natural acidity gives way to a swell of silkiness toward the finish. The excellent structure and well-defined fruit character ensure this will be a long-lived Chardonnay.
Ken Brown Pinot Noir, Clos Pepe Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills
This Pinot Noir balances pure fruit expression with superb structure and rich tannins. Concentrated aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum combine with a touch of blueberry and black pepper. The flavors, including hints of blackberry and black licorice, are enveloped in an opulent mid-palate which culminates in a resonating finish. This wine promises excellent development of flavor and complexity with additional cellaring.
Ken Brown Syrah, Bien Nacido Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley
This wine is an honest expression of the Bien Nacido fruit, combining aromas of dark plum, blueberry and black pepper with a background of smoked meat and French oak instilled spice. The flavors are remarkably extracted with dark fruit components and hints of leather and spice. Firm tannins are softened by a rich, lush mid-palate texture that leads to a round, lingering finish.
Ken Brown Syrah, Santa Barbara County
This Syrah is superbly extracted with a rich, dense texture and elegant tannins. Aromas of blackberry, cherry and plum mingle with hints of red licorice, vanilla and cinnamon spice. A subtle undercurrent of French oak complements the complex fruit character on the palate. The wine culminates in a long, opulent finish.

  Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills
Displaying elements of pure, concentrated Pinot Noir fruit, this wine combines aromas of black cherry and red plum with hints of rose petal and spice.
