Mer Soleil Vineyard

Mer Soleil Vineyard The Mer Soleil Vineyard, developed by the Wagner family beginning in 1988, is named for two natural forces that create its growing conditions: sea (mer) and sun (soleil). With plantings at two separate locations in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey County, Mer Soleil’s Chardonnay vines are nestled on east-facing lower slopes of the Sierra de Salinas range in what is one of the coolest, driest grape growing areas in California. During the growing season, warmer inland temperatures at the southern end of the Salinas Valley pull cooling morning and evening fogs into the vineyards. The afternoons, in contrast, are evenly warm and sunny. The absence of rain throughout the long growing season—harvest typically continues into November—and a pattern of brisk afternoon breezes keeps the grapes dry and pristine. Mer Soleil is not open to the public and has no tasting, touring or sales facilities.

  Chardonnay
Mer Soleil’s signature aromas of tropical fruit (mango, honeysuckle and citrus) with notes of toasted spice (clove, nutmeg). In the mouth, the flavors follow through seamlessly, fulfilling the promise of the aromas and balancing the ripe fruit with the acidity that is hallmark of this cool-climate growing area. The texture is mouthfilling—lush and dense; the finish is long and polished yet powerful.
  Chardonnay
The wine opens with tropical fruit and honeysuckle aromas. Luxurious flavors of crème brulee and even a hint of butter are framed by notes of fine oak and the lively acidity of citrus zest. The mouth-feel is full and lush and brings all the wine's elements through to a long, persistent finish.
  Late
Deep gold color. Aromas of wildflower honey, ripe figs, and apricots. Flavors of citrus, honey and apricot essence, with a note of brown spices. Lush, dense texture, mouthfilling and sweetly ripe, balanced by a note of citrus.
  Silver
Using Chardonnay grown in special blocks of the Mer Soleil Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County, we harvested the grapes when just fully ripe, their gold color hued with the green, expressing clean aromas of Chardonnay fruit and firm acidity. The grapes were pressed and fermented in both stainless steel and cement vats, with no oak contact or malolactic fermentation. We bottled the wine early in the year and capped it with a twist top to maintain its fresh character and crisp citrus finish
