Piña Napa Valley

Piña Napa Valley In 1979, the family, known as vineyard managers, established Piña Cellars, with the intention of producing their own Napa Valley Cabernet. Their busy lives intervened and in 1996, the family bought an unusual property on top of Howell Mountain which they call “Buckeye.” The family planted it to 100% Cabernet Sauvignon in 5x8 and 4x4 spacing stretching across the different contours of the vineyard. “It’s grapevine heaven, considering its soils and the southeast exposure,” the Piña brothers explain. The vineyard extends across a partially terraced hillside and a protected natural bowl; the property is a neighbor of Beatty Ranch, Ladera, White Cottage and O’Shaughnessy.

  2000 PIÑA Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a big, luscious, meaty & juicy Cabernet that demonstrates another fabulous year on Howell Mountain. The vineyard matures much later than the rest of Napa Valley, achieving a different texture to the maturity---very balanced with a big and elegant mouth feel. This wine absolutely smells of Cabernet, a very particular combination of chocolate, berries, tea and Howell Mountain spice in the nose. The wine has a long, elegant finish now with beautiful round nuances in the mid-palate. As the wine matures, that long finish will develop and even lengthen. The wine has at least a decade to reach its peak; It would suit flavorful dishes which can play off its elegance and vigor.
  2001 PIÑA Cabernet Sauvignon
Aromas of briary black fruits, blueberries, black tea, sweet vanilla and dusty spice, following through to an intensely concentrated yet exquisitely balanced palate. Flavors of dark fruits and a mouthful of chewy tannins mingle with Howell Mountain spices and seamlessly integrated French oak, all leading to an intense and lingering finish that promises years of ever-evolving complexity.
  Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain
Incredibly dynamic aromas of olives, cedar, sandalwood, luscious blackberry, candy apple, ripe cherries, butterscotch, toffee, black tea, chocolate and violets. The palate is decadent—a sweet core framed within classic Bordeaux tannins, round and chewy, with a long mouth-coating finish. All these amazing flavors in a supremely structured and balanced wine that still only hints at its future glory. The wine will continue to improve over the next 10 to 15 years and beyond.
