Cavatappi Winery

Cavatappi Winery Peter Dow runs this winery from the basement of a Kirkland restaurant, Café Juanita. He specializes in Italian varietals such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese but also produces many other wines. We arranged a private tasting some time ago and Peter graciously agreed. Our first challenge was finding the place! After we eventually found the winery entrance (next to the restaurant dumpster) we discovered that we had been forgotten. Fortunately, a winery worker let us in and we had a chance to look around. The general condition of the facility can be summed up in three words: rusty, musty, and dusty. If you could judge a book by its cover, then I am pretty sure that his wine has some spider webs in it. Mind you, we never got a chance to have a tasting. And in the years since, I have never tasted his wine. So it could be spectacular. The nice winery worker gave us a bottle of 1993 Sangiovese that is still ‘laying down’ in my racks. Some day we will open that sucker up and find out what Peter’s wine is like. On a positive note, we both loved his wine label. We are pretty sure he must have accidentally left an opened bottle on a label and then realized it was a great looking label afterwards.
