Judd's Hill

Judd's Hill Here at Judd's Hill we produce only red Bordeaux varietals, concentrating on the big three: cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. Any of our cabernet and merlot blends may show up with a bit of the other varietals according to the winemaker's artistic sense. When it comes to the king of red wines, cabernet sauvignon, we offer two versions. Our "Estate" Cabernet is vinified exclusively from the fruit grown on the surrounding hillside vineyards. Our "Napa Valley" Cabernet is a blend of our estate grapes, fruit from our neighbors, and grapes from the valley floor. Both cabs exemplify the Judd's Hill style: explosive fruit (think of that first bite from a fresh plum), easy on the palate to allow early drinking, and ageing potential as well. How are the cabs different? Intensity. Using 100% hillside fruit, carefully farmed by us, the Estate shows a bit more elegance and extraction, and is a better candidate for a rest in the cellar. The Napa Valley Cabernet is ready to go, approachable and delicious from the day of its release. Our merlot fruit is grown on the Summers Ranch in the Knights Valley, Juliana Vineyards in the Napa Valley, and an acre we have planted here at the winery. We vineyard designate the purchased fruit; the home-grown stuff usually goes into our Estate Cabernet.

  Cabernet Sauvignon
As always, the Judd’s Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of our own estate-grown hillside grapes and fruit we purchase from other Napa Valley grape growers. Having been a professional winemaker for the last 26 years, Judd’s Hill owner Art Finkelstein has had the opportunity over those years to source fabulous grapes which, when combined, exemplify the Judd’s Hill style. By purchasing fruit from selected areas we are able to blend together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, each selected for their individual contribution; a controlled synergy where the sum total exceeds the parts.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
Judd's Hill Cabernet is a sexy, elegant wine. The first impression is all about the fruit; lush and ripe and round. The tannins are soft and integrated but well-structured, allowing Judd's Hill Cabernet to age 10-15 years yet are eminently drinkable upon release. Judd's Hill Cabernet will complement steaks, spicy poultry dishes, cheddar or blue cheese, barbequed ribs and other red meats. Also, we've found this Cabernet Sauvignon to go especially well with Italian-influenced dishes.
  Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
A Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. That said, the wine really shows a lavish richness and finesse, with a nose redolent of berries and a bit of smoke. Its medium tannin levels suggest that this wine would pair nicely with a whole range of food styles, from roast beef and duck to the Thanksgiving turkey.
  Juliana Vineyards Merlot
Plum...Round...Full. If all we had were three words, those would about do it for our latest release of Juliana Vineyards Merlot, but they tell only a fraction of the story. This is a deeply flavored complex wine from a great vineyard in a great vintage. In the glass, it is rich and deep in color, offering a nose of black fruit and sweet oak. On the palate, the wine opens to layers of ripe plum, currant and blackberry. There is spice and a structure of firm tannins but the balance in this wine is what keeps you coming back. To choose three more words: Broad...Lingering...Sexy.

  Petite Sirah
Over the years, we have seen this fruit produce wines with perfume-like qualities and consistently moderate tannins, a tribute to the Cranston Brothers’ farming techniques. Deep, dark color and aromas of ripe plum and blueberry lead to a mouth-filling mélange of juicy berries and plum on the palette. Add rose petal, black pepper, with some tannins for structure, and the result is a wine that is round and supple on the palette, with enough weight and length to be taken seriously. Described by The Wine Tutor, John Thoreen, as “Fleshy and sexy,” this is one outright delicious red.
  Pinot Noir
Here is a stylish wine: medium body, full meaty character and raspberry fruit, with just enough French oak for nuance. Judd Pinot Noir has balanced tannins and that unique Burgundian charm. Pair the wine with our wonderful California fusion menus. Try the 2004 Judd Pinot Noir with hot smoked salmon, Chinoise style barbecued turkey, or grilled Asian quail. Pour yourself a glass, and marvel as the wild-berry notes pop out immediately and the richness evolves minute by minute. Wine is truly a living thing.
  Syrah
The mint and rosemary in the nose, following through on the palate, suggest that this is the wine to wed with lamb. We can also imagine it with Pasta Bolognese or pot roast, among other fine food parings.
