Gold Hill Vineyard

Gold Hill Vineyard Gold Hill was founded in 1980 by Hank Battjes. Hank spent 27 years as an Electrical Engineer at GTE in the Bay Area while managing to maintain his hobby and passion as an expert home-wine maker. In constant pursuit of his dream, he found 5 existing acres of vineyard on an expansive 80 acre parcel near Coloma. Over the next 10 years, Hank commuted from his home in Palo Alto to his Coloma ranch on weekends to further expand the vineyard to 40 acres. The Winery became bonded and fully functional in 1985. By 1989, Hank was able to retire from his work and move to Coloma to maintain his winery full-time. Ten more acres have been planted since, to make up today's 50 acre vineyard. Gold Hill's 4,000 square foot barrel room produces 2,500 cases of award winning wines annually. Gold Hill Vineyard has been producing gold medal winning Bordeaux style reds and Chardonnay since 1985. Recently the winery has increased its offerings to include Italian and Rhone varietals. Located one mile from the historic gold mining town of Coloma and Sutter's Mill, the winery is open Thursday through Sunday year-round and by appointment. Picnics, weddings and private parties are welcome.

Products

  1999 Cabernet Port
A new Gold Hill product, this Port is ripe, luscious and makes for a wonderful aperitif or desset sipper. Crushed from late-harvest, high-sugar Cabernet Sauvignon, this dessert wine is quite soft, well blended and not too "hot" at 18% alcohol. Created quite by accident, this Port is very drinkable. **Silver 2002 California State Wine Competion
  2001 Syrah
A classic Northern Rhone is packed with rich ripe fruit and berry flavors with a touch of spiciness. This wine exudes the character of the Rhone River Valley. Oak aged for eighteen months adds a hint of smokiness and softens tannins.
  Barbera
Packed with ripe berry and spice notes, this Italian varietal is a great pairing with pasta and game meats. It has very light tannins which makes it very drinkable now or lay it down for several years.
  Cabernet Franc
Fragrant blackberry, plum and a hint of cassise makes this wine very palatble now, but will laydown for years to come.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
Two years aging in french and American oak barrels helps accentuate the soft cherry, blueberry, and cedar bouquet of this award winning Bordeaux wine; the Vintners choice. Drinkable now, this Cabernet should continue to mature to its peak in 5 to 7 years. Double Gold Medal Winner, State Fair. Best Cabernet Sauvignon of the Foothils
  Chardonnay
The grapes for this wine were hand selected from the premium, southest facing slopes of the Chardonnay vineyard. Aged in French Oak barrels and fermented in stainless steel.
  Chardonnay Reserve
The grapes for this wine were hand selected from the premium, southest facing slopes of the Chardonnay vineyard. Aged in new French and American oak barrels, and left unfiltered to retain the incredible deep body and fruit.
  Merlot
This gorgeous award winning Bordeaux is sure to please. Two years in French oak barrels help accentuate the deep cherry and delicate cedar bouquet of this wine. *Double Gold State Fair *Best wine of the Foothils
  NV California Champagne
This delicate bubbly is a blend of Chardonnay and French Colombard. Subtly carbonated, it is surprisingly smooth.
  Viognier
This second vintage of Viognier is a refreshing delicate white Rhone classic. It has hints of pear and peach and is not overly oaked. It has hints of vanilla and a crisp finish.
  White Zinfandel
Don't let the color fool you! Refreshingly crisp and fruity, and just slightly sweet. Enjoy it with fruits and cheeses.
