Marston Family Vineyard
When Michael and Alexandra Marston became involved with the, then, Menasco Ranch thirty two years ago, it was not long after their marriage. It was also shortly after Al Menasco, a barn storming aviation pioneer, had hosted Clark Gable and Kay Spreckels at the ranch for their honeymoon (Menasco was their best man). Marston Family Vineyard is the home to the Marston family including their two children, John and Elizabeth. The family maintains constant contact with the vineyard and has worked hard to nurture and enrich it, Alexandra Marston echoes the sentiment, "this land is an intrinsic part of our family life." The 1998 vintage marks a new beginning for the Marston family, as it is the product of their commitment to consistently produce limited quantities of the highest quality wine under their own label. It is first and foremost a labor of love. "It is an exciting opportunity," as Michael Marston puts it, "to share the fruits of our labor, to make new friends and to extend the family."

Cabernet Sauvignon
This fourth vintage from Marston Family Vineyard reconfirms our focus to produce the highest quality wine from our vineyard in the Spring Mountain District that we have cultivated since 1969. The stony mountain soils provide an environment that intensifies the flavors of the fruit while producing smaller fruit clusters and berry size. 2001 was a superb year for mountain grapes. A dry winter and hot spring weather led to an early harvest with yields down between 5-15%. The warm days produced thicker skins on the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and therefore significantly more flavor. With our winemaker, Philippe Melka, we chose our favorite blocks in our 50 acre estate vineyard to produce a very limited amount of only 500 cases of our Marston Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2001 vintage will reveal a wine that will age beautifully for years to come.
