Renwood Winery

Renwood Winery Amador County is highly regarded for producing some of the very best examples of Zinfandel found anywhere in the world. At Renwood, we offer an array of hand-crafted Zinfandels that showcase the unique qualities of some of the world's oldest and most renowned vineyards from the Shenandoah Valley of California. Currently, we produce six proprietary and vineyard designated Zinfandels: "Old Vine," "Grandmére®," "Fiddletown," "Grandpére®," "D'Agostini Bros.," and "Jack Rabbit Flat." We have also pioneered and remain the sole producer of "Amador Ice Zinfandel" - the only zinfandel wine that is produced in the cryo-extraction process. Just after the fruit is harvested at it's highest degree of ripeness, the fruit is cryogenically suspended (frozen) for nearly two months to obtain maximum concentration. Once pressed, the "syrup" goes through an extended fermentation (approximately six months) before it is allowed to age in barrel for one year. The result is a unique delicious dessert wine that is the essence of Zinfandel. Amador's steep hillsides, exceeding 1,400 feet in elevation, and warm daytime climate, followed by cool evenings, make this wine region an ideal site for the cultivation of classic Italian varietals, such as Barbera, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. The terroir of Amador County is also conducive to the planting of Rhone varietals, including: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier. We use old-world, hand crafted winemaking techniques - including traditional basket press - to produce the best Italian and Rhone-style wines that Amador County has to offer

  Non Vintage Port
This Port was made from the traditional Portuguese varietals grown on the hillsides of Amador County. Renwood's founder, Robert Smerling has a deep passion for wine and cigars that made us take a traditional approach to Port.   Syrah Sierra Series
The fruit was hand-harvested and went through a long fermentation at cooler temperatures in individual vineyard lots, some with an extended maceration period on the skins in the traditional French style. This resulted in a rich, silky mouthfeel and bright fruit characters. We selected a combination of new and old American oak barrels to age the wine for 10 months. The final blend resulted in a deep, richly colored wine with a harmony of fruit, acidity, and tannins. The wine displays aromas of dark red fruits and sweet new oak. On the palate it demonstrates a silky texture that is perfectly balanced by an ultra-rich mouthfeel, a distinctive roasted peppery aroma with black cherry flavors, firm tannins, and a lingering finish.
  Viognier Select Series
The fruit was whole cluster pressed to remove the juice from the skins immediately. Once pressed, the must was pumped into a stainless steel tank to cold settle for about 48 hours. This allowed any sediments and solids to fall to the bottom of the tank. The clean juice was racked off the sediment, transferred to another tank, and inoculated to begin fermentation. The wine remained in stainless steel until bottling. Prior to bottling, the wine was cold filtered.
  Zinfandel Sierra Series
The 2002 Sierra Series Zinfandel was hand selected and harvested in mid to late October. Each vineyard lot was fermented individually at cool to moderate temperatures. Pressed at dryness, each lot was racked directly into barrels for aging. The individual lots were aged in a combination of new American oak and three to five year old French and American oak barrels for 10 months before the final blend was assembled. The resulting wine displays aromas of berry, cloves and cinnamon. The entry displays red fruit characters that carry through the mid-palate, finishing with a lingering vanilla and tasty oak ending.
