Meyer Family Cellars is a small, family-owned winery in the picturesque Yorkville Highlands appellation of Mendocino County. At once a leading artisanal winery in one of California’s emerging viticultural areas, and legacy of Silver Oak Cellars, one of the state’s iconic wine brands, Meyer Family Cellars occupies a unique place in the story of California wine. Established in 1987 by Silver Oak founders and former owners Justin and Bonny Meyer, the goal was to create a family wine brand that drew upon their extensive experience in the Napa and Alexander Valleys. Incorporated in the plan too was their son, Matt, a well-traveled student of wine and graduate of the enology and viticulture program at the University of California Davis who showed inherent winegrowing skills. Present-day, co-winemakers Matt and Karen Meyer focus on three wines: Mendocino County Syrah, Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, and California Port. They share the belief that Syrah grown in the cool climate of the Yorkville Highlands appellation is the region’s most promising grape variety, and that it will one day produce world class wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is made from Bonny’s Vineyard, the family’s prized estate vineyard in Oakville that has produced extraordinary wines for over thirty years while the Port program, started at Silver Oak by Justin and Bonny, represents the beginnings of the Meyer Family brand. All three wines embody the Meyer Family philosophy that viticulture is best practiced without compromise and that perfection is an endless pursuit.

Meyer Family Cellars Mendocino County Syrah
Sourced from six Mendocino County vineyards, the 2003 Meyer Family Cellars Syrah demonstrates this great variety’s potential for elegance and complexity when produced from cool-climate fruit. This wine displays high-toned, wild berry and cherry characteristics, typical of Mendocino, along with varietal aromas of blueberry and white pepper. Firm, bright acidity balances the Syrah’s ripe fruit and rich mouthfeel. Two-years’ barrel-aging in 50% new American oak has helped soften and integrate the tannin structure, while contributing sweet vanilla and a subtle spiciness to its complex aroma. Our 2003 Syrah reflects the family’s tradition of producing elegant, food-friendly wines.
