Fernwood Cellars

Fernwood Cellars Fernwood Cellars resides on 98 acres of land in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation and has been in the winemakers family since the 1860s. Originally a homestead, the property was transformed into a vineyard in 1999 and a winery site in 2001. The estate is unique in that it has multiple microclimates within the property boundaries. The western-most portion of the property has redwood trees and ferns—a very lush landscape. The Eastern portion has oak and madrone trees, more typical of the inland climate of California. The winery is located approximately 2.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies, with the Santa Cruz Mountains lying in-between. During the summer, the fog from the ocean creeps up to the mountains each night, skipping over the canyon where the winery is located. As a result, the cold maritime air is pushed in front of the vineyards, cooling off the vines in the evening. This allows us to reap the benefits of the warm summer air, as well as the cool evenings, which, in turn, allows our grapes to mature at a much slower rate than most vineyards. The final result is a selection of balanced wines that display true character and structure. Matt and Tiffany Oetinger own and run the vineyards. They take great pride in the winery and the wines that it produces!

Central Coast Syrah "Webb Family Vineyard"
Aged 16 months in 100% French oak this wine is succulent and complex, with cherries on the nose and bitter-sweet chocolate and blackberries in the mouth. This Syrah is drinking well now and will be at it’s best over the next eight years.
  El Dorado Zinfandel
The crop for the 2001 El Dorado Zinfandel was hand picked during the intense heat of August 2001 in the Sierra Foothills. The fruit on the vines were purposely reduced in June to add complexity, in the face of the extreme heat of the foothill summer, which can typically “wash” out the character of the fruit. The grapes came from two different vineyard sites. Grapes from the Hummingbird Hill Vineyard and the Latrobe Vineyard were combined in order to balance the characteristics of the young fruit and the more established fruit. The fruit maintained a fullness of character throughout fermentation and into barrel. Aged in 100% American oak for 14 months, 50% of the barrels were new and 50% were one-year old. This combination of new oak and El Dorado fruit has given this wine a very appealing, yet approachable complexity. This wine is delightful and will be at its best over the next seven years.
El Dorado Zinfandel "Hummingbird Hill Vineyard"
This wine grown by Lew Oetinger, made by his son Matt Oetinger dedicated to his son Jake Oetinger is obviously special to our family. This field blend of Zinfandel with a little Petite Syrah, all head-trained, makes for a very jammy wine, with blackberry and cherry flavors. From our family to yours, enjoy!
Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon "Redwood Retreat Vineyards"
*California State Fair Gold Medal Winner and Best of Class Greater Bay Area Appelations* This is the first vintage harvested entirely from our estate vineyard, showing great depth and character. The quality of the wine is a phenomenal glance into what our vineyard holds in store. It will be at its best over the next 10-15 years.
Santa Cruz Mountains Zinfandel "Redwood Retreat Vineyards"
Head-trained and dry farmed this wine has quite a following. With clove and pepper in the mouth, all combined with briar-fruit the 2003 vintage continues the style this wine has established in past vintages. This Zinfandel is drinking well now and will be at it’s best over the next eight years.
