Freemark Abbey Winery
|
|
It began over a quarter of a century ago as a vision shared by a handful of pioneers; those with an intimate knowledge of grapes and a deep respect for the land. This vision took root, was nurtured by skilled hands and ultimately resulted in one of the first premium wineries in the Napa Valley.
Today, the wine of Freemark Abbey stands as a testament to what the rich earth of the Napa Valley is capable of creating when working in perfect harmony with nature.

1991 Edelwein Gold
2001 Edelwein Gold-Extended fruit maturity and slow botrytis development produced fruit highly concentrated in sugar, acidity, and flavor. Fermentation of Edelwein Gold is always challenging, and in 2000 the yeast fermented very slowly for over five months! It produced a wine of pure gold color with intense aromas of fruit blossoms, orange marmalade, and honey. In the mouth, the wine displays a rich viscosity, flavors of peach, marmalade, and apricots, all complimented by a perfect sweet-tart balance.

Cabernet Bosché
A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, all from the Bosché Vineyard, located in the heart of the Rutherford Bench. Deep ruby color, with an appealing nose of black cherry, aromatic cedar, earthiness, and dusty forest floor. Black cherry, coffee, and dark chocolate flavors blend smoothly, leading to a balanced wine with a lingering finish. A full 24 months of barrel age coupled with 16 months in the bottle allow this wine to slightly soften, but the 2000 Cabernet Bosché still retains it powerful fruit character and solid structure. Our Winemaker suggest 10-15 years of cellaring.

Chardonnay-Truchard Vineyard
The premier release from a renowned Carneros vineyard, has a pale yellow hue with fragrant aromas of fresh apples, mandarin orange, and candied fruit, plus spicy hints of nutmeg and vanilla. There is a delightful balance of crisp and creamy textures, reminiscent of angel food or pineapple upside down cake. A very viscous velvety mouth feel leads to a long delicate finish.

Merlot Napa Valley
Our 18th vintage of Merlot displays dark ruby color and a wonderful mélange of aromas including dark cherry, boysenberry, toasted marshmallow, milk chocolate and spicy oak. The ripe red fruit flavors of plum and cherry are spiced with subtle hints of black pepper, and are well balanced with soft tannins and a slight toasty oak finish. It’s ready for dinner tonight, and it will continue to develop for another six to eight years.
Percentage of each grape variety used: 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot.
Growing Season Notes: Winter rainfall came mostly in late January through early March at about 60% of historical average. Bud-break began in mid-March. Frost was battled in March and April. Several heat spikes occurred in May, June, and July, followed by cooling trends that allowed for promising development of fruit. Harvest was well paced and spread out over a long period, allowing us to selectively pick at optimum ripeness.
