Colibri Vineyard & Winery

Colibri Vineyard & Winery Before I became a plant scientist, my wife, a physician and I spent most of our adult lives in the medical field. We worked together on an Indian reservation for a number years. Many of those who visit a reservation say they can feel a spirit or a force present around them. Some say it's spirit souls watching over their ancestors. As I walked this land I felt it call to me, there were signs everywhere. While I stood surveying the buildings and grounds, my gaze was suddenly drawn to a hilltop overlooking the entire site. There, at the crest of the hill was a perfect stone arch, carved thousands of years ago by the combined forces of nature. Native Americans believe that the stone arch, this frozen rainbow, is a sign, a calling, a "good luck" charm. Without hesitation I phoned my wife and asked her to come visit our new retirement home. Needless to say we purchased the property, named it Colibri and began work creating our dream.

From Tucson: Take I-10 East (very nearly into New Mexico....) And exit at exit #382 in San Simon, the “Portal Road” exit. Take a quick left onto the frontage road where the sign points toward Portal. Follow the frontage road east to N. Noland Rd and turn south ®) onto it. The pavement will end in 7-8 miles, and it becomes a graded dirt road, stay on this road until you come to a fork, bear R onto S Noland Rd. And follow it until the next fork. Bear R here onto Hilltop Rd. Take Hilltop Rd bearing west up East Whitetail Canyon for approx. 4.5 miles. Look for a house with a red metal roof after crossing a cattle guard, keep going west and look for the large tan metal building on your R, across from the vineyard. You're there! (Big Hint: When you think you're lost......keep going.)

  Counoise "Rufous"
A light bodied red wine made from the uniquely flavored Counoise grape, which originates in the Chateneuf du Pape region of France. We were the third vineyard in the US to plant Counoise and thus allow it to be registered as a wine grape varietal here. Serve lightly chilled with cheeses, salads, and chicken.
  Cuvee de Colibri "Magnificent"
A full bodied red wine tht offers a hing of the blends we hope to make in the future. The rich Syrah (45%) is lifted by the Mourvedre (22%), with layers of flavor added by Grenache (11%), Counoise (11%) and Roussanne (a white variety...11%) to make a satisfying dinner wine. Aged in 85% new French oak. An elegant wine.
  Grenache "Blue Throat"
Tasting Notes: Our first vintage of Grenache, this offers great promise ... richly flavored and colored this is a unique expression of Grenache. A smooth French oak finish again offers those tones of vanilla and nuts to complement the fruit tones. Pairs well with grilled meats, spicy dishes such as Putenesca, and last night, grilled burgers ....
  Mourvedre "Black Chinned"
Full in color and fruit, yet lighter of body and alcohol, this varieatal (also known as Mataro or Monastrell) is widely grown in the Rhone and Spain. Often used as a blended wine, it is also now emerging as a popular stand alone wine. Great with mild cheeses and light lunches, fowl or pastas.
  Mourvedre "Rufous"
50% Mourvedre 50% Counoise. This blend is made from more fully ripened Mourvedre and our first harvest of Counoise. A varieatal grown in the Chateneuf-du-Pape region of France it adds it's distinctive flavor to this blend with tones of raspberry and rhubarb. An adventurous wine experience. Serve with fowl or fish, Chef Damien suggests a salmon dish. Can be served lightly chilled or at cellar temperature.
Petit Verdot 5%, Syrah 95%, "Magnificent"
We grow only a tiny bit of Petit Verdot, but even the addition of just 5% to the Syrah had a dramatic effect on the wine. Darker still with a more velvety finish following full fruit flavors, this wine is best paired with chocolate, girlled red meats, blue cheese, and cigars.
  Roussanne "Anna's"
I love this wine ... a full bodied white wine with rich fruitiness and good acidity, hints of peaches and pears, and as it warms, honeysuckle. My wine hero John Alban makes the best on the planet (I think), and ours will get better. Don't be thrown by the bit of sediment, decant it carefully and enjoy.
  Syrah "Magnificent"
Tasting Notes: From the beginning we felt that Syrah would be a fine grape for us. This vintage has left us no doubts. Picked at the peak of ripeness, it is a deeply bodied, rich red wine of dark purple garnet in color, flavors of cassis and lilac are forward with rich tannins and a softer finish. This wine was aged in new French oak for 9 months, imparting a note of hazelnut finish.
