Purgatory Cellars

Purgatory Cellars Owner Marko Copic originates from Jastrebarsko, Croatia and brings 20 years of “Old World” and Mediterranean style wine making experience to Colorado, combining them with his modern wine making techniques to offer a vastly different wine tasting experience to the Colorado viticultural scene. Purgatory Cellars works hard to source most of their grapes from Colorado and to exploit the qualities of Colorado’s unique climate and significant elevation features. Purgatory Cellars is working to bring specific qualities of grapes from the Western Slopes and Four Corners regions of Colorado to the Front Range. Purgatory Cellars is making and aging wine in Amphora containers with their origin going back about 5,000 years in ancient Greek and Roman history when Amphorae were used in the preservation and transportation of various products both liquid and dry, but mainly for wine making. The Amphorae are made from special clay in the country of Georgia and infused with bees wax and then baked in a wood fired kiln until the bees wax is completely infused in the pot. This wine making technique provides flavors and characteristics different from other aging methods. Amphora production will be about 3,000 liters per year including at least 5 different varietals.

  Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine was aged in oak barrels for 18 months. Exotically aromatic, with hints of berries, cedar, vanilla, clove and rose petals. Flavors of cherry, blackberry, licorice and cream surround the mouth leaving a warm lingering finish.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
Soft and smooth with flavors of blackcurrant and cassis. this wine would be excellent with steak, lamb and aged cheese. A wonderful holiday addition to any meal.
  Chardonnay
Barrel aged to allow for it's own unique characteristics that developed into a rich complex wine. Vanilla, honey, butterscotch... A hint of butter & oak. Excellent with seafood and pasta.
  Chardonnay
Barrel fermented in both French & American oak. Soft with hints of green apple & pineapple. Wonderful with appetizers, salads, chicken and fish.
  Chenin Blanc
A wonderful light, dry and crisp white wine with a hint of lemon. Serve chilled by the glass or, with appetizers, light pastas and fish.
  Gewurztraminer
This wine is off-dry, fruity & crisp. The bouquet is floral & fruity, with flavors of pear. Very refreshing and can be served with a variety of foods. A wonderful, & fun holiday wine!
  Merlot
This wine has a bouquet of black cherry with just a hint of oak. it is earthy, with flavors of cassis, plum and a chocolate undertone.
  Red Table
This is our signature wine. An ultimate blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is very smooth, slightly rich, with intense berry flavors. Wonderful with roasted meats, barbeque, pasta and cheese plates...actually just about anything!
  Sauvignon Blanc
Made the New Zealand style, this wine is fresh and crisp with a unique blend of topical and citrus fruits-grapefruit. Wonderful as an aperitif or a perfect luncheon wine.
  Zinfandel
This wonderful wine is fresh, fruity, and has all the characteristics of Zinfandel with a sweet twist. Excellent as an aperitif, delicious with strawberries and chocolate! A wonderful edition to our wine list!
