Mia Sonatina Cellars

Mia Sonatina Cellars We are Vern and Jo Spencer, owners of Mia Sonatina Cellars. Mia Sonatina is the culmination of our transformation from wine drinkers to wine makers. Being residents of Oregon, we began our journey by visiting the tasting rooms and wine tours of the fine wineries in our state. Then about 7 years ago we began to dreaming of owning and operating our own winery. We began exploring the world of wine beyond our local community. We discovered new wines from the world’s great wine regions. We began making wine in our garage. We pulled the stems off 80 pounds of grapes by hand and then stomped them with our feet. We bottled 12 different wines our first year and nursed them through fermentation by keeping them warm around our wood burning stove. We bottled 12 different varieties however, we bottled them too early. The result? Exploding corks! We laugh now about some of our errors and the results. We learned from our favorite home brew retail shop and our own mistakes. Our knowledge and our confidence grew. We entered our wine in our local county fair (ask Vern about that $4.50 check). By that time, we had greatly improved our winemaking and were able to create enjoyable and drinkable wines. We still thirsted for more knowledge. We began to develop our knowledge of growing grapes, winemaking and educating our palates through a professional winemaking and vineyard management program. We planted our first acre vineyard of nursery stock. We worked in other wineries developing more wine industry knowledge. We have made some wonderful friends as we have followed our dream. Finally, Mia Sonatina Cellars was born when we filed for our licensure in July, 2003. Our goal is to create a beautiful place to enjoy the music of the vineyard. Being a newly formed winery, we are looking for that magical place to set down our roots. Until that time, we will be functioning as a virtual winery. Our wines may be purchased at one of the many Oregon wine festivals; one of the retail outlets listed on this website; via online sales or phone. Loosely translated, Mia Sonatina means “my little song”. As a sonata is a song for your heart, our wines are a song for your palate. Join us for a glass of one of our delightful wines.
