El Molino Winery

El Molino Winery El Molino Winery was founded in 1871 and closed due to Prohibition in l921. Originally Zinfandel, Napa Claret, Bale Red and Riesling were produced. These wines were shipped by rail to Napa City and then by boat to San Francisco restaurants. After a sixty year hiatus, El Molino was restored in 1981 with the aim of producing small quantities of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. We have been low-impact farming our Rutherford vineyard since 1986 with the mission of reflecting the character of the vineyard . We believe the best wines are made in the vineyard, with special attention given to each vine. In our subterranean cellar, we use gravity flow to move the wines and our caves provide the optimal temperature and humidity. We continue to make wine the old fashioned way, with limited “winemaking”, and we use the vineyard's indigenous yeasts in the fermentations. Reg continues to do the punch-downs in his madras plaid bathing suit and we still do all the bottling and labeling by hand. We regularly taste from our library stock to confirm our wines' ability to age. See our website for tasting notes and press.

  2001 Napa Valley Pinot Noir
The El Molino 2001 Napa Valley Pinot Noir shows classic raspberry, plum and cherry notes, with secondary hints of spice, toffee and cream. It has a crisp entry with a tightly structured mid-palate showing integrated tannins and ample acidity creating a plush mouth-feel. The red fruit flavors continue through the palate to a long harmonious finish.
  2002 Rutherford Napa Valley Chardonnay
The El Molino 2002 Rutherford Napa Valley Chardonnay is once again consistent with our house style showing rich bold tropical fruit flavors with a backbone high in malic acid. It is a voluptuous Rutherford Chardonnay with the balance it needs to stand next to the richest foods. As always we barrel fermented in French oak, leaving the wine on its original lees for eleven months and without malolactic fermentation. We think the wine exhibits floral and citrus notes that enhance the complexity of the tropical fruit. A bright entry leads to a viscous textured mid-palate that is given definition by the malic acid with the pear and brioche flavors mirroring the aromatics leading to a lingering crisp finish.
  Rutherford Chardonnay
Bright pale gold with a lime green rim. Lifted aromatics of lime, pineapple and melon, supported by wild flower, Irish Cream and wet stone. A crisp attack to a viscous broad yet supple mid-palate with silky texture framed by fresh acids, citrus and mineral flavors fanning across the back palate to a long finish.
  Rutherford Pinot Noir
Brilliant deep red. Classic El Molino nose of lifted black cherry, raspberry, and kirsch liqueur. Secondary notes of underbrush and smoked cedar adding complexity. Bright lifted entry to a powerful but integrated tannin structure with a broad plush mid-palate, cherry flavors and excellent grip, followed by a long fresh finish.
  Rutherford Pinot Noir
The El Molino 2002 Rutherford Pinot Noir has oxblood red color and lifted notes of cedar and violets. On the palate, a ripe broad entry to a dense viscously textured mid-palate with wonderfully integrated tannins, overlaid by dark cherry, raspberry and spice flavors, harmonious acids and a persistent finish.
