Guenoc and Langtry Estate Vineyards & Winery

Guenoc and Langtry Estate Vineyards & Winery While Guenoc has enjoyed significant critical success with its Reserve Chardonnay, Meritage red, Meritage white and Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery has emerged as one of the top producers of two of the hottest varietal wines on the market today, Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc. Guenoc’s commitment to Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc reflect its vineyard resources, yet it also demonstrates the winery’s willingness to do things a little different. Guenoc could have converted its Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc vineyards to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay years ago, but the winery believed strongly in the future of these varietals and in their ability to set new standards for quality and character when grown in Guenoc Valley and Lake County. Today, the winery’s commitment to Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc is being rewarded, as critical acclaim and consumer appeal have made them two of Guenoc’s best sellers. Guenoc’s history as a winery dates back to 1854 when wine grapes were first planted in the Guenoc Valley. Victorian actress Lillie Langtry, a colorful theater star in Europe and America, owned the property from 1888 to 1906 and made wine which she claimed would be the “greatest claret in the country.” In 1963, the Magoon family from Hawaii acquired the property and established Guenoc Winery with a focus on producing top-tier wines from the Guenoc Valley. The Magoons planted extensive vineyard acreage and were one of the first in California to plant the five major red Bordeaux grape varieties. In 1981, Guenoc Valley was approved as an AVA (American Viticultural Area), with the distinction of being the first single-proprietor AVA in the country.

Products

  Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast
Bright cherry notes in a lustrous garnet bowl invite the palate to full black cherry, boysenberry and blueberry flavors etched with just enough herbal edge to create complexity in the long, silken finish. Aged in 60 gallon French and American oak barrels which contribute depth and a suggestion of spice and vanilla.
  Chardonnay, Guenoc Valley
Elegant and delightful, this chardonnay from Guenoc Valley is redolent in apple, lemon, apricot and lime aromas and flavors, offering silky tones and a sustained and smooth finish. Originating in vineyards first planted between 1854 and 1871, the fruit retains the signature of the earth of Guenoc Valley and enjoys the bright acidities and long tannins of a climate blessed with warm, dry days, cool nights and a westerly afternoon breeze.
Genevieve Magoon Vineyard Reserve Unfiltered Chardonnay
Harvested from a small corner of the famous Genevieve Magoon Vineyard in Guenoc Valley, this reserve Chardonnay is unfiltered and unfined to preserve every nuance of its uniquely intense fruit. Grown from Dijon clones and fermented with selected Burgundian yeasts in oak barrels produced in Beaune, its classic Burgundian style displays an elegant creaminess enhanced with 100% malolactic fermentation.
  Guenoc Vintage Port, Guenoc Valley
Chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, vanilla and spice fragrances etched in roses and violets burst open to a silken richness on the palate. Petite Sirah brandy deepens the already complex layers of luxurious fruit from Guenoc Valley’s Serpentine Meadow Reserve Vineyard. A distinctively elegant cuvee, excellent aging potential, limited bottling.
  Langtry Meritage™ Red
Floral aromas, hinting of lilacs and jasmine, threaded with chocolate, deep cherry, spice, walnuts and vanilla, lead into a brilliant bowl of chewy, black-hued fruit. Flavors of dark cherry, blueberries and blackberries with vanilla become soft, lingering tannins. This vintage is an exquisite cuvée assembled from the traditional Bordeaux varietals grown on the pyroclastic volcanic soils of Guenoc’s famous Tephra Ridge and on the rocky alluvial soils of the Guenoc Valley floor.
  Langtry Meritage™ White
A perfect synergy of Guenoc Valley sauvignon blanc and sémillon, this Langtry cuvée offers a bouquet of citrus, apples, figs and melons etched with cinnamon and nutmeg. Layers of bright flavors are tempered with the creaminess of barrel fermentation in French Allier oak. Langtry’s remarkable elegance evokes the best of Guenoc’s John H. Magoon Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Vineyard and sémillon in the heart of Guenoc Valley.
  Langtry Reserve Sauvignon Blanc|
Guenoc's Langtry Reserve Sauvignon Blanc represents the winery's finest fruit from its vineyards in the Guenoc Valley AVA. Guenoc has traditionally produced a Meritage blended white wine in previous years, however the 2003 vintage Sauvignon Blanc was of such exceptional quality that the winemaking team elected to produce a Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. This complex wine was barrel fermented in American, Hungarian, and French Allier oak and aged for eight months. Produced in very limited quantities, this extraordinary wine shows great complexity
  Petite Sirah, North Coast
Black purple hues embrace blackberry, chocolate and orchid aromas and open into mouth filling flavors that remind one of just how good a petite sirah can be. Fifteen months in American oak endow this lovely wine with sufficient hints of spice and toast to call for an evening by the hearth and a plate of rich gorgonzola or morels roasted with Guenoc’s petite sirah, onions, garlic and rosemary.
  Sauvignon Blanc, Lake County
Bright citrus-like aroma similar to grapefruit. This wine has a very clean focused fruitiness which is predominantly citrus-like with a background of apricot. The 2002 Guenoc Valley Sauvignon Blanc has a very smooth entry which leads to a full bodied soft and appealing mouth feel. It finishes with a classic Sauvignon Blanc crispness. This wine was stainless steel fermented at low temperatures (average 45F) with the classic VL3 yeast from the Bordeaux (Graves) district in France. This yeast is known for enhancing the varietal flavors of Sauvignon Blanc specifically. The clone on Sauvignon Blanc which was responsible for this wine is the Sauvignon Musque clone of Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley. A small amount of Viognier was blended into the wine to enhance the floral aspects of the aroma.
  Serpentine Meadow Reserve Petite Sirah
Coffee, chocolate, mint and tarragon thread through the full, jammy fruit of Guenoc’s Serpentine Meadow Reserve Petite Sirah. Richness, texture and complexity, knit into a profoundly purple black wine, leads to a finish of silk and satin. The Serpentine Petite Sirah promises longevity with proper cellaring. Only 500 cases were produced from Guenoc Valley.
  Victorian Claret, North Coast
Red and black cherry aromas mingle with the scent of roses in this elegant cuvée blended with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc and carmenère. Guenoc continues its Bordeaux traditions with a claret of depth and distinction, including for the first time a small percentage of carmenère, planted in Guenoc Valley in 1994, and considered to be the grandfather of the great Bordeaux varieties.
