Emilio's Terrace

Emilio's Terrace Oakville, California is a very small town in the heart of Napa Valley with a population of barely 300 residents. In 1993 the Federal government officially recognized it as the Oakville Appellation - a distinct viticultural area, which is also referred to as an "AVA". The appellation of a wine is the "growing address" of the grapes from which a wine is produced. The Oakville appellation has a unique microclimate that has historically produced ultra-premium wine grapes. Specifically, Oakville provides an ideal place to grow and mature fine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals. This appellation is home to such world-class vineyards as Harlan, Staglin, Opus One, Far Niente, and Robert Mondavi's To-Kalon vineyard, to name just a few. While all the vineyards with an Oakville appellation produce distinctive wines that exhibit classic aromas, flavors and color intensity characteristic of Oakville wines, Emilio's Terrace is graced with added character from the unique growing conditions provided by the steep slope of its terraced vineyard. Rising high above the Napa Valley floor, grapes at the top of the slope ripen earlier than those at the bottom. The hand-harvested grapes are even picked at different times - even though it's a relatively small vineyard. When otherwise identical grapes are subjected to even the most subtle differences in climate or soil conditions - exposure to sun, rate of ripening and different harvest dates all play a role in defining the particular flavor signature of each batch of grapes. These variations add to our wine's great complexity - contributing many layers of component flavors that are artfully enhanced and captured in the final bottling, where all the wine's sensory details are fully revealed.

  Emilio's Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
This particular wine is beautifully intense, with a dark, rich color and aromas of cedar, coffee and blackberry. It shows as an outstanding example of the power of this magnificent vineyard, yet is quite elegant in style and structure - a classic Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were hand picked September 25, 2001 at 25.4 Brix. The blend is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot - all from our 100% organically farmed hillside vineyard. Barrel aged for 23 months, the barrels comprised of 95% French oak and 5% American oak. We bottled nearly 700 cases and will release them October 1, 2004.
  Emilio's Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
The 2002 Emilio's Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a wonderfully intense wine with deep aromas of currants, black cherries, and roasted vanilla beans with hints of smoky oak. The wine is very well balanced and surprisingly supple in its texture, even with the presence of the chewy tannins. The fruit shows well now even as it continues to gain bottle age. This vintage of Emilio's Terrace is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot - all from our 100% organically farmed hillside vineyard in Oakville, just above Robert Mondavi's famed To-Kalon Vineyard. This wine is an outstanding example of the power of our wonderful vineyard. It can be enjoyed now, however, we suggest cellaring it for several years to allow the wine to mature and develop into its full potential.
