Meador Estate

Meador Estate The wines of "Meador Estate" are unique expressions of their terroir focused by intensely specific viticulture and old-world winemaking techniques. By their nature they are of very limited production. Our vineyards are larger than many French communes. There, as here, there are variations in terroir in small locations within, that have displayed superiority and thus acquired fame. Within our vineyards there are certain areas - different for different varieties - that have demonstrated merits highly prized by us over several decades of observation. We have utilized specific farming techniques to enhance that expression of the location. We selectively hand harvest the fruit (passing several times over the area - days apart!) at what we feel is optimum.

  "Magnus", Red Bordeaux Blend
This "Bordeaux" blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot is not a Bordeaux nor a Californian, it is a marriage of the two artistic concepts. Its lower alcohol (13.8%) is of the Old World, while the mouth-filling richness and body is of the New World. The French Oak Barrel aging and detailed farming has resulted in Gold Medal recognition already in its short existence. Sadly, only 300 cases were produced. Hand selected grapes, open top fermenting and barrel aging in quality French Oak all contribute to a wine that is smooth supple and generous. "Magnus" displays a solid core of ripe berry and black current flavors in an elegant medium body with a long finish. This wine is well worth aging.
  Chardonnay "Block 9"
This is a classical Burgundian style Chardonnay, not a "fat" California style. It is barrel fermented using "battonage" procedures "Block 9" Chardonnay is aged for 1 year in Francoise Freres barrels. Lovely tones of English toffee with gobs of fruit mingle on the palate. The Meador Estate Chardonnay is a long aging wine whose components will blend and marry with age.
  Dry Chenin Blanc "Old Vine"
The wine is delicate and crisp with tremendous characteristics of mango, papaya and lime. This wine will age for many years keeping with a true Vouvray Dry Chenin style. It is a pleasurable companion to those foods using butter and cream. Dry Chenin is marvelous with light pastas white sauced, seafood, and salads or as an aperitif.
  Sauvignon Blanc "Block 3"
The wine displays a light clonal floral aspect in the nose along with fresh mown hay notes with some citrus tones. On the palate, the generous acidity combines with classical old-world Sauvignon flavors that bring such delight to the table. Sauvignon, in our perception is a wine for the table – a companion to food. This rendition serves us perfectly - aroma, flavors, structure, acidity, and finish.
  Syrah "Maverick"
Fermentation takes place in 6 ton vats in which we hand punch several times a day. The fermented wine is then transferred to a combination of American and French oak for barrel aging. Syrah wine is fruit driven. At least from us it is. Our cold climate and Ventana Vineyard's rocks (not soil - rock, gravel and sand!) married to the Syrah vine (no rootstocks - ours are direct producers - on their own roots in the ancient way) result in a forward, lush fruit effect of blueberries, blackberries, and cassis (concentrated black currants). Additionally, there are strong over-tones of black pepper, some rose, some violet and sometimes a light touch of tar. The oak is subliminal but seems to be the wedding bond integrating it all.
