Gifford Hirlinger Winery

Gifford Hirlinger Winery Gifford Hirlinger is a small family owned operation that started way back in 2001. It was in that year that the Berghan family purchased and began Berghan Vineyards in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley. It started out simply enough, growing grapes and selling them to local wineries. But after a couple of years they decided to complicate their lives by getting into the winemaking aspect of the business… resulting in Gifford Hirlinger. We know it’s a long and hard to pronounce name, but it actually means something to us! We thought our family was new to the Walla Walla area, but as it turns out we have somewhat of a history here. On both sides of the Berghan family, we have a direct ancestor who was born in Walla Walla when their families crossed the country in covered wagons in the mid 1800’s. So, Gifford and Hirlinger were the last names of those relatives on the paternal and maternal sides respectively.

  Eighteen Below
The “18 Below” is a wine named for a freeze that took place January 4th, 2004. We had enough bud damage that night that we decided the best course of action was to cut our vines down, which meant 100% crop loss. In order to make wine that year we were force to buy fruit from a vineyard outside of the Walla Walla Valley. At the time Mike, our winemaker, was working at Canoe Ridge Vineyard so he was able to get a few tons of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The resulting wine is full of ripe cherries and raspberries, dark chocolate, firm tannins, and a hint of toasty oak. It’s a perfect match with all kinds of roasted or grilled meats… We like it with grilled marinated flank steak and baked sweet potatoes!
  LV
The 2004 "LV" is a very special wine for us. Not only is there a large sentimental feeling towards it, but it is also a phenomenal wine! The name of this wine is sort of a double entendre. First, it was named for my late grandfather L.V. Brown (the dapper looking fellow on the label). And Second, it was named for the vineyard the fruit comes from, the Lewelling Vineyard in the Napa Valley. That's right, The Napa Valley. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Enough said
  Merlot
The Merlot is the first Varietal wine released by Gifford Hirlinger. It is an elegant, yet powerful expression of Merlot from the Walla Walla Valley. It loaded with flavors of cherry, strawberry and blackberry, with underlying notes of oaky vanilla and spice, all tied together with just enough tannin and acid to give it a wonderful balance.
  Stateline Red
The Stateline Red is a graceful blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a very food-friendly, versatile wine with enough structure to pair with a steak, but also fruit forward enough to pair with seafood dishes!
  Stateline Red
The Stateline Red is our first release! It’s a graceful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from our estate vineyard. This is a lighter style food friendly wine packed with fresh fruit, lively acidity, and underlying notes of spice. Designed to be versatile, we’ve paired this wine with several varied dishes… Try it with a wine reduction demi-glazed tenderloin, or better yet, a marinated grilled steelhead topped with a light wasabi, ginger, and lime sauce!
