Interior Route Wines

Interior Route Wines Welcome to Interior Route Wines. We encourage you to explore our site to see our wines and to learn more about the amazing wine making history of New Mexico. Interior Route Wines is a small, privately owned winery, started in 2010. Our name and wines give the opportunity to go back to 1629, when the Interior Route of the King’s Highway along parts of the Rio Grande River gave rise to the longest history of wine production in the United States. Monks that accompanied these expeditions planted smuggled vines from the old world, probably of the grape variety known today as the Mission grape, to ensure a steady supply of sacramental wine. While we don’t know which grapes were subsequently planted or survived into the wine stage during these early ventures, they were most likely from the Iberian peninsula, namely Spain and Portugal. Our primary focus is to explore wines with connections to that period – hopefully providing a taste of an amazing history.
