Gustavo Thrace Winery

Gustavo Thrace Winery Thrace Bromberger and her partner, Gustavo Brambila, opened Napa Wine Merchants--Napa's first collective--in July 2002. Located on the corner of First Street and along a main walkway to the downtown mall, they took over the space of a former wine retailer and kept his business name. The downtown foot traffic keeps a steady stream of customers in the store--sometimes as many as 100 per day on Fridays or Saturdays. About 75 percent of her visitors are tourists, but locals are now joining her Tuesday night wine appreciation classes and attend private tastings.

  "The Third Bottle" Napa Red
This is the first release of a Red Table Wine for GustavoThrace. The premise is easy - why keep opening expensive bottles of wine when your taste buds are past their prime? The 3rd Bottle was designed to that third bottle of wine you should have opened after already having a couple of bottles of wine. For this release, Gustavo blended Zinfandel for the spiciness, Merlot for the softness and Cabernet Sauvignon for the firm backbone. This is a lush, full, spicy wine that will easily become one of your go-to wines for your first and second bottles as well. The fruit is all from the Napa Valley and the wine was aged in American oak for two and a half years. This is an easy-drinking, affordable wine that we hope you enjoy with your friends and family. Pair it with anything from the grill, pastas and cheeses.
  Cabernet Sauvignon
The advantage of making only a few barrels of a given wine is that we now have the luxury of holding it until we feel it is ready to release. The 1999 fruit is from the Brown Estate in the Chiles Valley Appellation in Napa. It came in as bee-bee sized grapes, loaded with tannins which needed considerable barrel time to soften. After more than five years in French oak this lush beauty fills your glass with a very French style nose; earthy, violets, spice and roasted fruit. The lush, viscous mouth explodes at mid-palate, leaving a long, lingering juiciness. We think the wait was very worthwhile! Enjoy this with rich cheeses, earthy braised foods and all red meats.
  Napa Valley Chardonnay Carneros
This is the ninth vintage of fruit that we've harvested from the same single vineyard block in the Carneros. Gustavo loved this fruit and didn't want to mask any of the vibrant flavors so opted to put 75% in to stainless steel and 25% went into one year old French barrels. He used VL-1, a yeast that offers more richness while allowing him to still maintain the non-malolactic style we've always offered. The wine is bright green-gold in color. This beautifully balanced wine has lovely aromas of caramel, lemon drops and lemon grass up front. The mid-pallette has a hint of tropics and the mouth finishes with pronounced apples and pears. Let this wine mature in the glass to capture all of the nuances Gustavo has achieved.
  Napa Valley Muscat
A brand new wine from Gustavo, this Muscat is a real delight! The fruit is from old vines at the Nichelini Ranch in the Chiles Valley. The honeyed-amber color invokes the sunshine that made these grapes so wonderfully sweet. The aromas are heavenly! There are layers of peaches, lychees, honeysuckle, vanilla and hazelnuts. The wine was aged in Franch oak and there is just the slightest hint of toast from the barrels. It has a rich mouth with great citrus overtones. We serve this wine chilled on its own or paired with foi gras, soft cheeses and nuts. It comes in half-bottles only.
  Napa Valley Signature Zinfandel
The Signature Zinfandel and the Regular Zinfandel were harvested and fermented at the same time. The Signature Zinfandel was produced from Old Vines off the Nichelini Ranch while the Regular Zinfandel is from much younger vines. This wine was aged in French oak barrels rather than American. When you smell the wine it just screams "I am Zinfandel" with bright fruit, exotic spices and rich plum quality. The wine is earthy but the very ripe fruit has been beautifully balanced by the oak and tannins. Enjoy this wine wiht braised froods, ribs and Italian foods.
  Napa Valley Zinfandel
The Nichelini Ranch in the Chiles Valley up in the Eastern Hills of Napa was the source for this Zinfandel. The juice was fermented in half-ton bins and then aged for two and a half years in American oak barrels. the Chiles Valley is renowned for the spiciness of the fruit produced there and this wine really showcases that. The aromas burst out of the glass with cinnamon, allspice and juniper berries. There is a lovely dark cherry level along with a hint of roses, charcoal and cocoa finish. the tannins are well-balanced making this a great wine to go with foods. We like this wine with grilled foods, barbecue and spicy dishes.
  Petite Sirah
This is the first release of Petite Sirah for GustavoThrace. Only 120 cases of this huge, lush wine were made. The fruit was from 80 year old vines from the Nichelini ranch and was aged in 90 gallon Burgundian barrels. This wine is inky black, intense and everything a Petite Sirah should be. EXTREMELY LIMITED QUANTITIES AVAILABLE
  Sauvignon Blanc Mohr-Fry Ranch
This is the third release of Sauvignon Blanc from the Mohr-Fry Ranch in Lodi. As the vines get older in this block and the roots reach farther down into the earth we are seeing a greater minerality in the fruit. Gustavo balances this by choosing French yeast strains that highlight the melon and citrus aspects of the fruit. Gustavo Chose to harvest this fruit at a mere 22.5% brix as he wanted more of the grape skin flavors to enhance the acids in the wine to make it even more complimentary to foods. This is a great wine for afternoon sipping, sushi, Asian foods and out favorites, crab cakes and oysters.
