Pipestone Vineyards

Pipestone Vineyards Combining Eastern and Western traditions, Jeff Pipes and Florence Wong strive to manage Pipestone Vineyards sustainably and organically. Pipestone Vineyards may be the only vineyard and winery in California managed and built according to the traditional Chinese principals of feng shui (wind and water). Both philosophies, East and West, come together in our understanding of how each decision one makes regarding the land has an effect on many other natural systems. We follow a traditional French model in our winemaking that strives to show the terroir of our vineyard, showing the best wines that our soil, climate, exposure, and location can produce.

  Cabernet Sauvignon
Our 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is a FIRST for us! We are dedicated to Rhônes, but for you Bordeaux lovers, we got a chance to make wine from a garden-like postage-stamp sized vineyard just west of Paso. Good mountain climate for the Cab, the right soils and very low crop load. A Cabernet made by a Rhône producer – it’s got to be good.
  Estate Syrah
Our 2002 Estate Syrah was hand-harvested from the Estate Vineyard and then fermented in small open-topped fermenters. Aged in French and American Oak Barrels for 22 months, the wine is a deep purple-black with aromas of spicy blackberry, smoke and even bacon fat! The velvety tannins support a strong acidity.
  Grenache
100% Grenache Noir – the dark one from France! The classic based for southern Rhône wines, bottled here alone in all its glory! Dark ruby color with loads of red-fruit flavors: red and black cherry, dark plums, raspberry, boysenberry. And some very interesting spices: cinnamon and a touch of cardamom come to mind. Most of our Grenache goes into our traditional Rhône blend (Mélange) but we bottled a few barrels so you can enjoy its purity.
  Grenache Rosé
Our 2003 Grenache Rosé was made using the French Saignée method of bleeding off this wine from our reserve Rhône blend. With four days of skin contact this dry, French style Rosé has a deep red color and is full flavored. It has a balanced crispness and fruitiness, a touch of spiciness, and aromas of ripe strawberries, peaches, and raspberries. Serve it chilled with a summer BBQ or anything spicy.
  Mélange
Our 2000 Mélange is a classic southern Rhone-style blend of 70% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre. It exudes all the warm and sensuous flavors forged by our warm and sunny Mediterranean California climate. The wine is a deep garnet color with aromas of black cherries, black currants, blueberries, meaty game, and classic provençal herbs and burnished smooth tannins.
  Mourvèdre
Our first is a 100% Mourvèdre!
  Reserve Syrah
Our 2002 Reserve Syrah was hand-selected from the rockiest and most difficult growing areas. It was then aged in 100% new French Oak barrels. Only the best barrels were selected for the Reserve bottling. The wine is an intense purple-black with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, pepper, and smoke.
  Rhone Style Red
Our 2002 Rhone Style Red blend is a classic southern French style Mélange of 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache Noir, and 30% Mourvèdre. It exudes all the warm and sensuous flavors forged by our warm and sunny Mediterranean California climate. The wine is a deep garnet color with aromas of black cherries, black currants, blueberries, meaty game, and classic provençal herbs and burnished smooth tannins.
  Rock Basin Vineyard Red Wine
For the first time, this is a wine made from our friend’s small vineyard located over the 100 year old green iron bridge past Santa Margarita, the Rock Basin Vineyard Red. It’s grown in a natural amphitheater that is surrounded by 500 foot tall solid granite cliffs.
  Vin Rouge Méditerranéen
A Red Mediterranean Blend that celebrates the warm and sensuous sunny climate that California shares with the original home of these Noble grape varieties. 34% Syrah, 33% Grenache, and 33% Zinfandel. The wine is dark and concentrated with spicy flavors that bring out he best in Italian, Spanish, and Southern French cuisines.
  Viognier
The 2004 Viognier was barrel fermented sur lie in seasoned French Oak. The year was extremely dry and the vineyards produced a very small crop, concentrating all the vines energy into the berries. The wine is intensely perfumed with exotic tropical fruit, and aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine, wildflowers, tangerine peel and fresh pear. The wine was bottled early to emphasize its lively character, and we recommend you enjoy it within a few years of the vintage to fully appreciate its youthful charm.
  Zinfandel
The ’03 Zinfandel is from our friend’s West-side vineyard located between Turley and the hospital. The vineyard is so steep that I’m afraid to walk up or down it – no kidding. It’s head-trained and own-rooted and owned and farmed by likely the only Sri Lanken grape grower in California!
