Milat Vineyards

Milat Vineyards Milat Vineyards is a family-owned and -operated winery, situated on 20 acres of estate vineyard just south of St. Helena in the Napa Valley. Our production is limited to approximately 3500 cases of estate-grown, -produced, and -bottled wine. Our property, located near the now-defunct Pine Station railroad stop, was homesteaded in 1877, and five years later, the original vineyards were planted. In 1949, Richard and Izetta Milat acquired the land for a summer home to escape the San Francisco city life. Soon thereafter, the Milats decided to make St. Helena their permanent residence in order to raise their four young sons in the country. In the 1970s, two of the sons, Mike and Bob, took over the vineyard operations (the grapes were sold to local wineries). In 1986, the brothers and their wives, Carolyn and Joyce, decided to retain some of the grapes and made the first vintage of Milat Vineyards wine. By the 1999 vintage, all of the fruit from the property was being made into Milat wine. Our small production and family ownership allow us to maintain the highest level of care as we manage all aspects of the winemaking, from soil to bottle, as we like to say. All of our choices, from how we treat the land to which barrels we use, are made with the highest commitment to quality, and we believe this is reflected in our wine.

We are approximately 16 miles north of Napa, and 2 miles south of St. Helena on the Napa Valley's main route, Highway 29. Our nearest cross street, to our south, is Zinfandel Lane.

(Cheers! in Croatian) is our first release of a dessert wine. Although it was crafted in a Vintage Port style, we chose not to call it such in consideration of the vintners in Portugal, where, by definition, true Port is produced. We made ours from Zinfandel located in the middle of the ranch on the most gravelly soils. Small berries and low yields created a wine that is extremely rich in blackberry flavors and aromas. Using double-distilled brandy (what the Portuguese call Aguardente, or firewater) as a fortifier, we arrested the fermentation at about 7% residual sugar and a final alcohol of 19%. This wine is superb now and will age gracefully for years to come.
